Bill Baxley served as the attorney general of Alabama from 1971 to 1979. Baxley incurred the wrath of the Ku Klux Klan when he reopened the case of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. In a letter, the Klan threatened him, and made him an "honorary nigger," but Baxley responded, on official state letterhead: "My response to your letter of February 19, 1976, is—kiss my ass." Baxley succeeded in convicting Robert Chambliss in 1977. (Photo by John Scott; Alabama Archives)
1900s - Kate McHale was riding out to forage ducks, she dismounted to open a gate and a rattlesnake appeared. She had stumbled into a large den of them. While her 3 year old son Ernie stayed on the horse, she killed at least 140 rattlesnakes. Kate used some of the skins to make a dress and shoes (now in the Greeley museum). Kate married and divorced six times, and was a taxidermist, farmer, midwife, and bootlegger.... And a bad-ass bitch who gave zero fucks.
