For 5th grade book club
Wonder, the new young adult novel by R.J. Palacio. Every middle school kid should read this. Topics such as kindness, inclusion, meanness and exclusion are a central theme.
Ten-year-old Auggie Pullman, who was born with extreme facial abnormalities and was not expected to survive, goes from being home-schooled to entering fifth grade at a private middle school in Manhattan, which entails enduring the taunting and fear of his classmates as he struggles to be seen as just another student. - ALSC Notable Children's Book 2013
Wonder by R.J. Palacio. To quote one of our 4th grade patrons: "This book was just awesome!" In fact, Wonder was such a satisfying read that I've added it to my running list of 'children's books adults should read'. Homeschooled until now, Auggie is going to start 5th grade at Beecher Prep. Middle school is a social minefield, especially for a kid with genetic facial abnormalities. With engaging characters and some lessons we can all learn, this book is indeed 'just awesome'.
This was a incredible book that really opens your eyes. A book worth reading!

The Devil in the White City, by Erik Larson, is the true story of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, which was officially known as the World’s Columbian Exposition to commemorate the four-hundredth anniversary of Columbus’s discovery of the New World. There was, of course, a dark underside to the fair, personified by one Dr. H. H. Holmes. He was, arguably, America’s first serial killer. His story is interwoven with the story of the fair. He is the “devil” in The Devil in the White City.
The Light Between Oceans, by M.L. Stedman: - beautifully written novel about a light keeper on the coast of Western Australia nearly a century ago. It's a heart-rendering story about isolation and turbulence as powerful as when two oceans meet. This is a favorite and M.L. Steadman's first novel, but will be watching for others! Highly recommend

The light between oceans A Lovely Book worth reading
The Light Between Oceans, by M.L. Stedman: - beautifully written novel about a light keeper on the coast of Western Australia nearly a century ago. I read it and my Mom did also. She presented it at her bookclub. For me, it was a compelling read.
Southeast Book Club, Thursday, October 30 @ 6:45pm. The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman. A novel set on a remote Australian island, where a childless couple live quietly running a lighthouse, until a boat carrying a baby washes ashore.
Another recommendation!!!! This is worth reading. The Orange Door: Book Review: The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman
Great book to listen to on a long trip!
