The dress maker of Khair Khana. This non-fictional book tells of the amazing resilience of women under the thumb of Taliban regime. Not only did they survive, but prospered as entrepreneurs and built a foundation on which Afghanistan has begun to rebuild itself since the Taliban lost their control over the government. Very inspiring!

Little Bee by Chris Cleave - "I ask you right here please to agree with me that a scar is never ugly. That is what the scar makers want us to think. But you and I, we must make an agreement to defy them. We must see all scars as beauty. Okay? This will be our secret. Because take it from me, a scar does not form on the dying. A scar means, I survived." -Little Bee

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen - I listened to the audio version before the movie came out, and I'm so glad I did. The readers, and the book were amazing.
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen - great book WAY BETTER THAN MOVIE! Good story that keeps you entertained.
I am always desperate to read a book prior to its release on the big screen. Unfortunately, I don't always realize that some movies were books so I rush at the last minute to read the book. I still have yet to see Water for Elephants. I am already planning on reading The Hobbit beginning next week to get a head start. The Hobbit comes out December 2012.

The Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant = Historical Fiction about the time of the Bonfire of the Vanities
Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant. Oh how I adore historical fiction. Alessandra Cecchi is not quite fifteen when her father, a prosperous cloth merchant, brings a young painter back from northern Europe to decorate the chapel walls in the family’s Florentine palazzo. A child of the Renaissance, with a precocious mind and a talent for drawing, Alessandra is intoxicated by the painter’s abilities.

Cover image for Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi, a memoir shaped by books, about teaching Western literature in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
NOTABLE NONFICTION / Reading Lolita in Tehran / Azar Nafisi ~ Azar Nafisi's luminous tale offers a fascinating portrait of the Iran-Iraq war viewed from Tehran and gives us a rare glimpse, from the inside, of women's lives in revolutionary Iran. It is a work of great passion and poetic beauty, written with a startlingly original voice. Worth Reading

Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books by Azar Nafisi, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FC0XY6/ref=cm_sw_r_pi_dp_Eq-ftb1XJBZS7
'Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books' by Azar Nafisi: The author describes growing up in the Islamic Republic of Iran and the group of young women who came together at her home in secret every Thursday to read and discuss great books of Western literature.
Reading Lolita in Tehran, Azar Nafisi Once a week for two years, Azar Nafisi would gather a group of students to read Western classics, forbidden in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Accordingly, Nafisi’s “memoir in books” is divided into four sections: Lolita/Gatsby/James/Austen, each allowing her to view a different time in her life through a literary classic, interspersing the discussions she had with her book club with her expulsion from her job, the Iran-Iraq war, and her decision to leave.
Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books.. Worth reading.. Trust me!

The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. While I'm sure I would've been stoned to death for my Sassmouth during this time period, I loved all the women in this book.
Loosely based on an old testament story, The Red Tent by Anita Diamant is a tribute to the traditions of women in Biblical times.
Week 17 - The Red Tent (Anita Diamant) "The painful things ... seemed like the knots on a beautiful necklace, necessary for keeping the beads in place." "If you sit on the bank of a river, you see only a small part of its surface. And yet, the water before your eyes is proof of unknowable depths."
Jacob's only daughter is Dinah, revered and even spoiled by four mothers. The heritage of the Jews is told through the female. Thus, it is Dinah's lot to pass on the stories of her mothers and grandmothers for the next generation to revere. Mostly told in the "red tent" where the women go to have their female cycles, Dinah learns what is expected of a Jewish woman and her own rite of passage into Jewish womanhood. Dinah's love, leads to tragedy for her and a need to escape from her family.
Such a fantastic book. Read it 10 years ago, love it to this day.

This book happened to be on my shelf for a number of years, and I never opened it. It was my daughter's from college days. In any case, a couple of weeks ago I did read it, and it was absolutely wonderful! It took me back to the mid 1800's in the South and I felt like I was actually living along with the characters. It also was a movie a number of years ago. Excellent writing. Highly recommend.
