Every educator should read this book, it gives insight from a poverty stricken 9-year old in a school setting. It raises issues regarding how educators perceive some childrens' behavior. A very touching story that promotes empathy. "If She Only Knew Me" By Jeff Gray and Heather Thomas

The Green Mile : The Complete Serial Novel - Stephen King Set in the 1930s at the Cold Mountain Penitentiary's death-row facility, The Green Mile is the riveting and tragic story of John Coffey, a giant, preternaturally gentle inmate condemned to death for the rape and murder of twin nine-year-old girls. It is a story narrated years later by Paul Edgecomb, the ward superintendent compelled to help every prisoner spend his last days peacefully and every man walk the green mile to execution with his humanity intact. Edgecomb has sent seventy-eight inmates to their date with "old sparky," but he's never encountered one like Coffey -- a man who wants to die, yet has the power to heal. And in this place of ultimate retribution, Edgecomb discovers the terrible truth about Coffey's gift, a truth that challenges his most cherished beliefs -- and ours. Originally published in 1996 in six self-contained monthly installments, The Green Mile is an astonishingly rich and complex novel that delivers over and over again. Each individual volume became a huge success when first published, and all six were on the New York Times bestseller list simultaneously. Three years later, when Frank Darabont made The Green Mile into an award-winning movie starring Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan, the book returned to the bestseller list -- and stayed there for months. And now -- with a new introduction by King's foreign agent Ralph Vicinanza, as well as the author's own foreword -- we have the first hardcover edition of this magnificent novel in which "King surpasses our expectations, leaves us spellbound and hungry for the next twist of plot" (The Boston Globe). With illustrations and a new frontispiece for this edition by Mark Geyer.
The Green Mile is my favorite Stephen King book (and I have read many) and one of my favorite books, period.
Another book worth your time.

The Sicilian. Excellent book. I do recommend avoiding the movie at all cost.
This book takes place during The Godfather, during Michael Corleone's exile in Sicily. Michael plays a very small part in framing sequences. Gorgeous writing. Lush locale. Fantastic characters. Highly, highly recommend.

I loved the Odd Thomas books. Not as intensely scary and more mystical than most Dean Koontz books. Some of Koontz's books are too dark and intense for me, but others I love. He's an outstanding writer.
I like the Odd Thomas series, having said that, I like all of Dean Koontz's books :)
There are four books in this series, but this first one is the best... they're all well worth reading.

We lost another legend this week, with the passing of Where the Wild Things Are author Maurice Sendak early this morning. He was 83. Sendak illustrated over 100 books and authored over 20 more, but it was his 1963 landmark illustrated book, Where the Wild Things Are, and his character Max, that made Sendak one of the most famed authors of children's literature ever.

“Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a #WildThing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received." RIP #MauriceSendak
Any book by, or interview with Maurice Sendak is worth reading.
"I like interesting people and kids are really interesting people," Where the Wild Things Are author Maurice Sendak passed away today...unbelievably sad.

Book Review: The Girl Who Played with Fire - This series has been misrepresented (or at least I have misunderstood it.) The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a prequel to the second and third books. Which are just split because of length, but are really one book. The second and third books are much better than the first. This is a thriller/mystery book worth reading. Interesting to see how a different legal system affects the story line. Click through for the full review.

The Life of Pi is an adventure with religious overtones by Yann Martel. It tells the story of an Indian boy named Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel. Pi is a smart lad who begins to experiment with spirituality at a young age. Growing up a Hindu he is introduced to both Islam and Christianity and finds positive and powerful messages in all three religions, and begins to mix the three of them together in a unique hole. He states he, "just wants to be loved by god". The story of the Life of Pi is set in the three major sections. The first section is an introduction to Pi and an understanding of his life, religious views and understanding of animals due to his life with his family who own a zoo in India. The second section of the story starts when his family is supposed to move to Canada by boat. The whole zoo's menagerie goes along with them and in the course of the trip the ship goes down. High is able to escape and end up on a lifeboat with a Bengal Tiger, a hyena, an orangutan and a zebra. Much of the story takes place with what happens on that trip and how he and the tiger survived alone at sea for 227 days. The final part of the story shows Pi meeting with customs officials. Since the customs officials did not find any animals they do not believe his story. Pi then retells the story of a far more horrible voyage for Pi and asks the officials which truth they find to be the better one. The Life of Pi Movie is being written by David Magee and is being directed by the famous director, Ang Lee.
