the 45 layout mat...helps the child organize this huge work and leads to a better visual experience of the patterns of numbers.
For the 45 layouts love the look of this, but you have to consider, are you doing too much for the child with this mat will he learn to self organize, self correct and learn to judge space on her own ?
This complex layout can take several days and a firm understanding of place value.

19. Idea nineteen LOVE THIS! This will help students in counting money, but gives an authentic way to do it. Coin Critters is where you give the kids a number, and they have to count out the money to get the number by creating a caterpillar as they complete it. Their critter equals the amount you assigned them.

1.OA.8 Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 + ? = 11, 5 = – 3, 6 + 6 = . Students will roll dice and use the beads to solve the missing part of the equation.
See comments for ideas for classroom use. Common Core Math Standard: K.OA.A.1 "Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds, acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations."
A great activity connected to this standard: "CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.1 Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings1, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations". An alternative to using the addition symbol is to replace it subtraction sign to practice subtraction.
This handson addition activity allows students to see the change in how numbers grow or decrease as they add or subtract. "Analyze change in various contexts."
Pin #6: Bead Addition & Subtraction. In this independent exploration activity, students create their own sums by rolling two dice and using the beads to find the answer by stringing them onto a pipe cleaner; this is similar to a small abacus. Students then use the math symbol stones to represent their equation. There are addition and subtraction stones, so this activity can be used for either operation.
