nine patch quilt blocks
Here's a little trick using charm squares. Some of you might have seen this before. We all need a refresher now and again...right...LOL. Take 9 charms squares (5") and layout same way you would for a 9-patch. Did you see that designer rotary cutter??? When I saw this on Nicole's blog I was just so taken by what a neat idea Olfa has finally come out with something pretty...I just had to have one. Darlene was so sweet and kind enough to send one to me. I'm very thrilled to have a pretty tool for my cutting table....it's mine mine all mine....lol. Thanks Darlene you are a wonderful friend. The 9-patch blocks is all sewn. Easy so far right....lol. Cut the 9-patch block right down the center in both directions. See the new blocks emerging? I think the new blocks are 7". I made a total of 5 9-patches using one charm pack of 45 squares. This gave me 20 of the 7" blocks. Two packages of charms squares made 40 blocks for a lap quilt. It was so fast and easy to make 10 9-patches and then I was ready to cut my blocks. Option 1: This random layout of twisting and turning the blocks uses 36 of my blocks, makes a square quilt. Lay the blocks in any pleasing order with 6 rows across and 6 rows down. Option 2: Layout with all blocks placed with the corner square to the left top corner, makes a rectangular shaped quilt. This layout used all 40 blocks. 5 rows across and 8 rows down. Option 3: Is to place your blocks on point. With this layout I had 1 block left over, I used 39 blocks. There are so many possibilities with this block. Have fun playing around with your layout.

window dressings - makes the room look bigger
I'm searching for window treatments. My apartment only has two windows which means I'll have a little more $$$ to stretch on this project. Through my research I'm getting the impression that I can make the apartment appear larger by simply hanging the curtains above and wider than the windows. Cool right?? My biggest issue is deciding on color and what type of curtains to hang. Should I just hang sheers? I'm actually considering removing the blinds from the windows so that I can let in more light. I really like the idea of hanging curtains around a patio door to give it a window illusion in the following picture. Hanging curtains from the CEILING Another consideration is to actually hang curtains from the ceiling. This can give a room a more vibrant and unique feel. You could hang curtains from the ceiling above a bed or above the sofa in your living room. Believe it or not these are very simple and easy DIY projects. I'll have details and step by step instruction soon!! Stay Tuned!!
When I came across this public service announcement regarding curtains, I had to smile. Though hanging curtains to the ceiling and wider than the window frame is a surefire way to make the walls look taller and the room airier, the prevalence of curtains hung just over the window is enough for interior designer Erin Gates to issue a statement on behalf of windows everywhere. Do you agree?

String Quilt...Love them
April's Block for do. Good Stitches in my group was a couple of string blocks. Simple enough...I've made a whole string quilt before...this time last year in fact. It was a gift for my MIL. So I thought that a couple of blocks would be easy peasy. Hmmm... Well let's just say it was a little more work than I bargained for. You see, these string blocks for do. Good Stitches are actually made from a 9 patch of string blocks. And I had to make 2 blocks. So doing a little bit of quick arithmetic will lead you to discover that I needed to make 18 4.5" square string blocks. Pretty though, right? Perseverance was key here for me and remembering that this is for charity. I shouldn't begrudge a quilt for charity. And they really are kind of fun to make. Kind of. ;) Our color scheme was very Sherbety to me...oranges, pinks, yellows, and green. I raided through my stash and found an assortment of fabrics in these shades. This is a great stash busting block! Because those squares are so little you can use some of your smaller scraps up! And it's always fun to add in little pieces like this one. See the castle? The blocks really do look fabulous together and I'm comforted by the fact that I've seen a few other blocks with some of the exact same fabrics that I chose. So I think that they will all look like they belong together in the end. I of course am my overachieving self and always swirl my seams with a nine patch block...even string ones! It definitely helps the block lay flatter. (eta: a number of people have asked how to swirl your seams. I have a tutorial in my sidebar and you can also find it HERE) And I like to sew the blocks together with the paper backing still attached because it helps to keep the blocks from stretching too much when working with all of those biased edges. Oh and I thought myself quite clever when I used origami paper as the backing for these blocks. A quick trim, and they are a great size and weight for these little squares. And then I spent a good portion of time tearing all that paper off the blocks while watching the newest Harry Potter on DVD. Good times. :)
