19th Century Women Writers. In a male dominated society, it was exceptionally difficult for females to be taken seriously as "literary figures" really until the 1960s and 1970s through the various social movements sweeping America. This is a site dedicated to recognizing those women who persisted in writing despite these hardships, and offers biographies as well as a list of their various works. Authors range from Willa Carther, to Kate Chopin, to Charlotte Perkins Gilman and others.
