Here's an "optimal Pure Michigan road trip" This week, Michigan-native Randy Olson, the same gent who computed the national map, published a 2,098-mile, 43-site trip though Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas. On his website, he says it should take about 40 hours of driving time, and also recommends it be done in the fall to take full advantage of the seasonal foliage.

This "optimized" Michigan road trip will take you hours to complete. According to Randy Olson, miles and 43 stops is the perfect road trip around Michigan. Olson – who’s about to graduate from Michigan State University

Petoskey Stone, Michigan State Rock - composed of fossilized coral, Hexagonaria percarinata, found in and around the Lake Michigan shores (Petoskey, MI). How could coral have thrived here? 350 million years ago during the Devonian Time Period much of North America was covered by warm shallow seas. Later, the stones formed as a result of glaciation, in which sheets of ice plucked stones from the bedrock, grinding off their rough edges.

The Petoskey stone was named for an Ottawa Indian Chief, Chief Pet-O-Sega. The city of Petoskey, Michigan, is also named after him, and is the center of the area where the stones are found. from the Native Heritage Project.
