Neat book - could be used to incorporate language arts.
Max’s brothers have grand collections that everyone makes a big fuss over. Benjamin collects stamps and Karl collects coins, and neither one will share with their little brother. So Max decides to start a collection of his own. He’s going to collect words. Great book!!
My daughter would love this. Could easily be paired with a craft of collecting words from magazines and such and have the kids arrange them for funny sentences. Max's Words by Kate Banks. Max's brother like to collect stamps and coins, but little Max loves to collect words. Words can be arranged to create a story, but arranging a bunch of stamps or coins creates nothing new! This unique children's book pays homage to the written word!
Max's Words (2006) As a mentor text for teaching vocabulary and story writing, a book can’t get any better. On the NCBLA 2007 list of outstanding literature, Max’s Words introduces us to Max, a little brother without a collection. Wanting a collection like his brothers, Max begins to collect words. His collection grows and grows until he has enough for stories, and for sharing.

Max's brothers are fascinated with Max's collection of words, as words can be arranged to create a story, but arranging a bunch of stamps or coins creates nothing new! A hilarious and exuberant retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, in which a brave, little red pencil finds her way through the many perils of writing a story, faces a ravenous pencil sharpener (the Wolf 3000)... and saves the day.
Red Writing, Little Red, Melissa Sweet, Red Riding Hoods, Joan Pigeon, Children Book, Melissa D'Arabian, Fairies Tales, Pictures Book
LITTLE RED WRITING by Joan Holub, illustrations by Melissa Sweet. A fantastic take on the classic fairy tale and a wonderful book that teaches kids about writing. Instead of taking goodies to Grandma, Little Red completes the class assignment given by Ms. 2 and follows the story path, deciding to write about bravery. There's no Big Bad Wolf, but there is a pretty scary looking electric pencil sharpener in Principal Granny's office!
Little Red Writing by Joan Holub & Melissa Sweet - 2013, Red Riding Hood, Picture Book, Humor, K-3
Little Red Writing by Joan Holub and Melissa Sweet. This retelling of Little Red Riding Hood as a pencil is one of Julia's favorite children's books. We have a copy at Oreana.

My Teachers Secret Life! A printable writing prompt to go along with it. Great wiring idea!
My Teacher's SECRET Life! Use as a writing activity about how students think the teachers secret life would be.
Writing Assignment- Start by reading the book My Teacher's Secret Life by Stephen Krensky. Students then brainstorm about what their teacher's "secret life" might be, and create a circle map to include any ideas they have. They then create a flow map to create their story, drafting, peer conferencing, revising, editing, and illustrating. Wonderfully imaginative stories can then be put into a class book and saved by the teacher.

First Grade Buddies: Mentor Text 5.4.14
This site has a lot of good books to read aloud when teaching about compound words. Once There Was A Bull (frog), is full of examples of compound words that the teacher could have students pull out. The class could make a list of compound words from this book to see what two words the compound word is made up of. Rick Walton
