Dr. J, born Julius Erving, retired basketball player who helped launch a modern style that emphasizes leaping and play above the rim. He helped legitimize the ABA, and was the best-known player in that league when it merged with the NBA. His signature "slam" dunk became an art form and helped popularize the sport. He is the 5th highest scorer in professional basketball history and the only player voted MVP in both leagues. He is one of the 1st players to have a shoe marketed under his name.
