StarTalk Radio Fan Pins
This is a board for any StarTalk fan who wants to pin something about the show, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, science, astronomy, astrophysics, scientific literacy, life in the universe or even our guest celebrities. Please try and keep your pins within this rather broad category. (I.e., puppies are cute, but off topic.) Keep Looking Up!

...I've been listening to this awesome podcast...called StarTalk...hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson... 'science for any occasion'... keep looking up...I figured that I'd make a post on: a.) why StarTalk is an awesome podcast that you should listen to b.) as couched in a discussion on how some of the recent episodes I've listened to have gotten me thinking about YA novels and their portrayal of science and the future #yabooks #youngadult #dystopia #science #sciencefiction

How Galaxies are Classified by Type (Infographic) by Karl Tate, Infographics Artist |
Astronomer Edwin Hubble, after whom the space telescope is named, classified galaxies according to shape. The Hubble scale chart takes a wishbone, or tuning fork shape. Armless, elliptical galaxies are on the left. Spirals are divided into those with a central bar and those without one. Looser arm windings are toward the right. Even distant galaxies, seen as they were billions of years ago, fall into the Hubble shape classifications.

Artist's illustration of our Local Group via Chandra X-Ray In the 1920s Edwin Hubble finally put the matter to rest, when he used Cepheid variable stars within the Andromeda galaxy to determine that it is indeed an island universe residing beyond the bounds of our Milky Way galaxy.Observatory.
Milky Way Local Group The Milky Way is not an island universe, but a member of a small cluster of galaxies called the Local Group. The Local Group contains about 3 dozen known galaxies, clumped in two subgroups around two massive spiral galaxies—the Milky Way, and the Andromeda Galaxy. In several billion years it is possible that the Milky Way and Andromeda will collide and merge to form one huge elliptical galaxy... Photo via : NASA

43,000 Galaxies on a Map / the most complete map of our local universe to date. It took more that ten years to create, has 43,000 galaxies and extends out 380 million light years from the earth. The 3D coordinates of each galaxy was recorded so the raw data could potentially be used to build a realistic 3D model of the universe.
