Dust Storm - Stratford, Texas (1935) #dustbowl
The Dust Bowl was a period of severe dust storms. The phenomenon was caused by severe drought combined with farming practices. The wet time ended in 1930. April 14 1935 known as "Black Sunday", 20 of the worst dust blizzards occurred turning day to night. The Dust bowl exodus was the largest migration in American history within a short period of time. In the fall 1939, after nearly a decade of dirt & dust, the nearly decade-long drought ended, as regular rainfall finally returned to the region.
By the time the Dust Bowl was over in 1940, 2.5 million people had left the Plains. The Dust Bowl’s reach extended far beyond the farm. In May 1934, massive dust storms caked cities as far as New York, Atlanta and Washington. In Chicago, a two-day storm dumped 12 million pounds (5.4 million kilos) of soil on the city. A great book on this subject is Timothy Egan's "The Worst Hard Time")

Catatumbo Lightning -- The Catatumbo Lighting occurs on the mouth of the Catatumbo River at Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela. It is an atmospheric delight, which creates incessant, powerful flashes of lightning. The phenomenon occurs because of a mass of storm clouds that form a voltage arc more than three miles high.
15 Spectacular Lightning Strikes (lightning strikes, lightning strike photos) - ODDEE
weird natural phenomena
Here, in one, tiny, swampy corner of Venezuela the storm beast makes its lair, and produces the most breathtaking spectacle of a natural light show on earth. This mesmerizing atmospheric phenomenon is known as Relámpago del Catatumbo, or Catatumbo lightning, and it only occurs in one very defined area of Venezuela, at the mouth of the Catatumbo River where it empties into Lake Maracaibo, in the state of Zulia.
In Venezuela, just above the mouth of the Catatumbo River, a lightning storm has been raging for at least two centuries. I know that sounds like science fiction, or some hackneyed fantasy villain's lair -- but it's real. For 160 nights out of the year, the Catatumbo lightning strikes for 10 straight hours, at a rate of nearly 300 strikes per hour.

Volcanic lightning is seen over the Puyehue volcano, over 500 miles south of Santiago, Chile, Sunday June 5, 2011. Authorities have evacuated about 600 people in the nearby area. The volcano was calm on Sunday, one day after raining down ash and forcing thousands to flee, although the cloud of soot it had belched out still darkened skies as far away as Argentina. 6/8/11 The eruption of the Puyehue volcano in the Andes mountains of southern Chile provided some spectacular images of the force of nature. Ash covers the landscape and thousands of people were evacuated from the surrounding rural communities. The volcano, which hasn't been active since 1960 when it erupted after an earthquake, sent its plume of ash 6 miles high across Argentina and toward the Atlantic Ocean. -- Lloyd Young (33 photos total)Volcano erupts in Chile - The Big Picture - Boston.com
A spectacular electrical storms light up the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle range after the massive 8.8-magnitude Puyehue volcano erupted in Chile which had laid dormant for over half a century. Lightning bolts appear above and around the Chaiten volcano in southern Chile as seen from Chana, some 30 kms (19 miles) north of the volcano, as it began its first eruption in thousands of years, in southern Chile May 2, 2008.
