Whittington Castle in northern Shropshire, England, was originally a motte-&-bailey castle, but in the 13th century, this was replaced by buildings around a courtyard whose outer wall was the curtain wall of the inner bailey. It was built on the border of Wales & England as a castle of the Welsh Marches. It is the only castle in the UK which is owned & managed by a community of local residents.
