the inside of a play house with lots of furniture and accessories on display in an open area
mashing up IKEA furniture seems to be "a thing" in many schools now. The dialogue with students is helpful, the results are ingenious and the costs are very low. This bunk bed remodelled as an early years play kitchen in Ciudalcampo, Madrid, Spain is a great example!

The wonderful West Thornton school has transformed itself - see also their video (click VISIT) posted to help the new NSW Parramatta school in its journey to excellence.
a row of urinals mounted to the side of a wall with pictures on it
SO much to say about toilets in school - but for now, this wonderful toilet wall in Forest Hill school just raises the level of aspiration and makes the toilets rather less industrial / bestial. You can always know a school by its toilets...
there are many kites hanging from the ceiling in this school room with people walking around
I've said it often enough: schools get designed in 2D, teachers and students live in them in 3D. Ceiling displays matter so much - not least because of the way they can limit sound. Also note here the unobtrusive use of screens, not projectors (ugh) everywhere in this Barry Island classroom.

I am a huge fan of curtains as agile walls - they can be opened rapidly, they work when partly opened and if there are two layers they soak up sound very effectively. But they also provide a terrific projection surface - as seen here
the ceiling is covered with white circular lights
Simple but effective sound dampening using ceiling "UFOs" with soft foam bacling
there are children sitting on colorful benches in the room
tiered cohort seating - the technology is often collaborative
soft curved tiered cohort seating - the curve helps because eye contact helps children confirm behaviours (it's OK to smile, etc) - just as curved seats help audience reaction in the theatre
an inflatable tent is set up for children to play inside and outside the room
little inflatable spaces can add intimacy, focus, playfulness and excitement - this one at the new IPACA http://www.ipaca.uk.com
a metal structure with several different types of fish on it's sides and bottom
Stairosaurus: Who says school stairs have to be boring? Fab dinosaur stairs at Buskelundschool in Silkeborg, Denmark
a glass table with an intricate design on the top and two chairs at the bottom
Simple but effective: Spanish school has such a simple idea for conflict resolution: the conflicting parties all sit around this knights of the round table Round Table (so to speak) and nobody gets up until the conflict is resolved. Playful but effective
some people are sitting on benches in front of a television screen and an inflatable tent
pop-up (or rather pump-up) spaces are appearing everywhere to put often quite large but interesting semi-enclued spaces in larger areas. This example was at the Learning Without Frontiers conference in London.
two chairs and a table in a room with lights on the wall behind them,
sometimes people say "mood lighting? universal display surfaces? playful spaces? how will this prepare children for a world of work? Well, the world of work is learning about learning too - this mood-lit, lightbox-walled, playful space is in a company in Barcelona - not a special room, it is where people work day to day.
a hole in the floor that is filled with electrical wires and an outlet for plugs
simple - large amounts of money are often spent on under floor boxes for power, connectivity etc., but in this Barcelona design company the connectors are simply safely under removal floor board sections. The floor boxes never seem to fit laptop power supplies - these work for everything and cost next to nothing to implement
an office with yellow walls and black circles on the wall is decorated in bright colors
TAFE is having a tough time in Australia as cuts tighten budgets, but this amazing pod in a TAFE institution in perth shows that their imagination is undiminished. Love the peep through windows and relationship between this intimate space and the huge hall is sits in.

stunning new leadership centre in Melbourne - this is just one part, a space with a full observation studio behind mirrored glass - like we had in the original Ultralab in Brentwood in the 80s. The architecture is fascinating - the 100+ year old building is preserved and none of the fab new interior has any right angles - so old and new are distinct
