The Standard Chair is the result of a long, drawn-out battle between Jean Prouve and an age-old furniture design problem. Early on in his career, Prouve noticed that the back legs of chairs were taking so much more of the strain, as they supported the weight of the user's upper body. In response, he spent the next 16 years developing and perfecting a design that would give added support to the back of the chair, while still keeping his typical avant-garde style. Charles and Ray Eames designed La Chaise in 1948 for the New York MoMA's 'International Competition for Low Cost' furniture. La Chaise didn't win, but its unique shape certainly made it one of the most notable entries, featuring in the catalogue and exhibition. Charles and Ray chose the name 'La Chaise' for two reasons. The most obvious is that it is the French translation of the furniture's form. Charles & Ray Eames, Wooden Cross, Vintage Glamour, Obvious, Recliner, Competition, Reasons
