Succulent Garden | Purple and pink echeveria suggest water lilies. White-webbed Sempervivum arachnoideum rosettes sparkle like sunlight on the surface of water, and in their midst is a flat green Aeonium tabuliforme (lily pad aeonium). A topdressing of green and blue florist's marbles enhances the illusion of a water garden. Baldwin took the photo at the California Cactus Center in Pasadena, and the design was by Arree Thongthiraj.

LANDSCAPE AROUND A SINGLE TREE. This is gorgeous...a tree (just imagine it for a sec w/o the plants at its feet) that has been transformed by a variety of flowering and non-flowering plants, all of which appear to enjoy shade. The brick border, too, creates a defined space, giving it a prominent focus in the yard.

Flower Box Ideas for Shade | garden plans – shade garden in rosedale gardens [1000x603 ...
Shade garden (another view): One of the keys to success in this garden is a consistent color scheme. The main plantings are red/burgundy and chartreuse. Chartreuse is the perfect color for shade because it’s bright. The red/burgundy coordinates well with the brick and wood used for the fencing. The generously curved brick edge adds great personality to the design. This flower bed uses a double set of bricks which creates a very cool look.

The benefits of WOOD ASH in the garden. the compost. I remember we would shovel all the ash out of the wood stove and put it in a bucket to carry down and dump on the vegetable garden.
Lee has always dumped our woodburner ashes in my garden, knew it was good for many plants, but did not know the slug benefit. I never have slugs in my veggie garden! Alternative Gardning: The benefits of WOOD ASH in the garden
The benefits of WOOD ASH in the Garden: 2. Use the ashes to make tea for tomatoes. Put five pounds of ashes in a permeable cloth or burlap bag, tie it shut and lower it into a 50-gallon garbage can filled with water, as if it were a giant tea bag. Let it sit for about four days, then dip the tea out with a watering can and pour a cupful around your tomato plants once a week, as soon as the plants begin to flower. Most crops can use a potassium boost, but especially tomatoes.
