The story behind this huge artwork is amazing. It is both a painting, known as the Ngurrara Great Sandy Desert Canvas of 1997, and a landclaim made by the traditional owners to the Australian government. Each patch has been painted by an elder to represent the piece of country over which they have custodianship. It is both a map and a repository of all the knowledge and mythology belonging to that country over thousands of years. The claim was successful.
