Addicted to Art: Country View Crafts - Bugs, Bees and Butterflies. Lik the coloring on the tag. Said did with alcohol inks.
It is a pleasure to be joining the Country View Crafts Challenge and Projects Design team today. Two fabulous blogs and a great online shop (where I spend far too much money!). I am sure you all know them well but here are the links just in case: Country View Challenges Country View Crafts Project Blog Country View Crafts Shop The first of the month means a new challenge and it is Bugs, Bees and Butterflies. The winner will receive a £20 shop voucher from our fabulous sponsor, Country View Crafts. The Top 3 entries and our Special mention award ( the most original and creative representation of the theme) all receive blog badges and a chance to feature as guest designers. So onto my project. I was recently at my first weekend craft retreat and attended a short class (run by Lorraine Bilsby) where we were creating this reversed canvassed. The original class project was based on Tim Holtz September tag - however I did change mine quite a bit ! Having applied gesso over all the areas of the canvass that were on show I started on the base section. I squirted some alcohol ink onto my craft mat and swooshed my glossy card through it to get a subtle uneven covering. Any gaps were filled in randomly used a felt applicator. The card was cut to slightly bigger than the aperture. I then stamped various stamps in archival ink. Once dry this was carefully bent to fit inside the canvass aperture. The frame of the canvass (once dry) was covered in some text paper, carefully cutting the corners to fit. I inked with gathered twigs distress ink and stamped the side edges with a crack stamp (sorry no photo). The sentiment was cut from one of Tim's dies in mirri card and alcohol ink added (sorry not an expert on alcohol inks colours - an orange and a blue). I love this effect on mirri card. Brads were added and smashed a bit to age them. I edged with black archival. In the class we then set about making rainbow butterflies with alcohol inks as Tim did with his tag. Having done these I really didnt like them so decided to take more mirri card and use the same technique as the label. I stamped various sizes of butterfly, cut them out and edged with black archival. They are mounted at different heights using coiled wire. I still felt something was lacking on my canvass so cut some swirls later from grey board and applied some distress paints randomly including antiqued bronze to continue the metallic feel. Quite a long post for me - thank you for getting this far! I will be back on Monday with my second project for Country View - but the next one is a little simpler! Nikki xxx

Who you are is completely up to you. ༺ß༻
Inspired by Pam CarrikerÃs new book, "Creating Art at the Speed of Life", I chose to create my own, one-of-a-kind canvas. Who You Are Canvas Project Instructions: Randomly collage a blank canvas board with an assortment of paper from Prima MarketingÃs Epiphany 6 x 6 paper pad and Something Blue A4 paper pad. Cut a scallop border, punch or cut out various sized circles, and add a long strip down the right side of the canvas. Once satisfied, attach the pieces to the background with gel medium, and let dry. Use Ranger InkÃs Heat-It Craft Tool to help speed up the drying process. Next, create a white wash by mixing some white gesso and water. Use a paintbrush to apply the wash and tone down the patterns and colors of the papers. Let dry completely. Add layers with Dina WakleyÃs heavy-body acrylic paints. For this project, I used Turquoise and Lemon. Apply the paint with your fingers and the Mini Ink Blending Tool. I chose not to change the foam pad between colors, which added a nice green tone to the background. Use your fingers to add swipes of Magenta paint for a pop of color. You can choose to completely cover the collaged papers with paint or let some of the paper show through. Once youÃre done, let the paint dry completely. Stamp two strips of Prima MarketingÃs Epiphany stamp using permanent black ink, one across the middle and one at the bottom. Paint over the stamped text with a gesso wash to tone it down. To add some contrast, apply swipes of white gesso using the blending tool. Stamp white dots of gesso into the smaller circles using the blending tool. Replace the foam pad on the Mini Ink Blending tool and dab the foam with Black Soot from Tim HoltzÃs Distress Ink Mini. Stencil texture into the smaller circles using Storytime Stencil by Seth Apter. Use the heat tool to speed up drying and to prevent smearing. Using the same foam pad on the blending tool, add words using Dina Wakley Affirmations Media Stencil. Use the heat tool to dry each line before stenciling the next, otherwise it will smear. Outline the circles and scallops with Faber CastellÃs StamperÃs Big Brush Pen in Warm Grey. Add the dots and words from Kaisercraft Rub-Ons Secret Bird Society Black down the long strip. Remember the scallops you cut out at the beginning? Use the remnants from the initial paper and stencil scalloped-boarders using the ink blending tool and some white acrylic paint. Change the foam pad on the ink blending tool and stencil scallops in the same manner across the top using black gesso and Magenta acrylic paint for added interest. Add random swipes of black gesso along the edges. Outline the black scallops with pens from the Faber-CastelÃs essential Mix and Match Pitt Artist Pen Set. With the Crafter's Workshop Specimen Stencil, randomly stencil circles using the foam pad you used to stamp the white scalloped boarders.

I haven't yet decided what to make with the collection of little clockwork bits I bought for crafting. I'm enjoying just having all those gorgeous little cogs and gears as I mull the myriad wonderful possibilities. In the meantime, here's inspiration in the form of some really amazing things others have made - tiny clockworky things, whimsical robotoid beasts, magical creatures with charm and personality - these are steampunkish masterpieces. Some are disarmingly simple, some incredibly detailed, but they all tweak my sense of wonder. (Authors have introduced many a mechanical character who's more than just a machine. Baum's Tik-tok from Oz, Rutkoski's Astrophil from The Kronos Chronicles, Whitehouse's Angus from The Island of Mad Scientists, and Juster's Tock from The Phantom Tollbooth spring to mind, but I'm sure there are others. I'm not sure why living clockwork would seem so lovable. I'd expect it always to be portrayed as creepy, but often it's not.) In any case, I think these sculptures are all a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy them! (And if your steampunk-tooth is still not satisfied, I've made an Etsy treasury with even more clockwork creations.) [Pictures: Eupatrous gracilicornis, sculpture from watch parts and real beetle by Mike Libby (Insect Lab); Valor - the Steampunk Dragon Prince, assemblage sculpture by Will Wagenaar (Reclaim2fame); Large Lightbulb Fly, brooch by Denise Humphrey, (spankyspanglerdesign); Robotic Bug 208, sculpture by Whitney Dirks-Schuster (MollCutpurse); Chomper, sculpture from recycled watch parts by Justin Gershenson-Gates (A Mechanical Mind); Steampunk Scorpion, sculpture by Daniel Proulx (CatherinetteRings); Clockwork Rabbit, sculpture by Sue Beatrice (All Natural Arts).]

Thursday already? Jeeze. Where's the time going? I finally got my Halloween stuff up yesterday and will take some photos this weekend to share. Meanwhile, I've got a fun and inky project to share over on the Ranger website. An altered sketchbook for my daughter, who is always sketching something. She keeps it in her backpack and whenever the opportunity arises, she sketches. Teenagers are hard to please - at least mine is - so I was thrilled that she really liked it and is proud to show her friends. Here's a peek below. Those Dylusions sprays are addictive! Combining them with Tim Holtz's new stencils from Stamper's Anonymous, and you've got all kinds of fun. Be sure to hop over to Ranger where I show you step by step how to make your own. They'll link you to all the great products I used to make it, too. BEFORE AFTER Thanks for stopping by!

Retro Café Art Gallery: Santos Cage Doll Shrine Kits + a FREE GIFT!
Several of you have been asking me for Santos Cage Dolls for a while now and last Sunday I decided to go for it! Santos Cage Dolls have been popular in the mixed media world for some time now, so I'm super excited to bring you some, Retro Café Art Gallery style! I modeled my dolls after traditional Santos Cage Dolls and our fantastic articulated doll style worked perfectly for them! We also have several yummy new colors of Inka Gold in stock, just in time for Valentine's Day! CHECK IT OUT HERE I decided to play with one of our Medium 3-D dolls, which is quite large standing at 10-1/2" tall! The fun bits inside her cage are not glued down. I figured I might want to change them out now and then! I named her Joan, after Joan of Arc, a patron saint of France! For those of you who don't know, "Santos" is the Spanish word for saint. Starting in the 17th century, Santos Cage Dolls were commonly used as altars or shrines inside homes. I can't wait to play with more. Normally, I alter my pieces before putting them together. However this time I worked after the doll was already assembled and it worked out great. After a few coats of acrylic paint, I used a two step crackle, then aged her. I wanted her to look antique! I think my favorite part about the doll are the tacks (included in the 3-D kits!). Supplies Used: Used Medium 3-D Articulated Santos Cage Doll Shrine Kit, Santos Doll Head Paper Cuts, Angel Wing Cut Outs, Dress Form Cut Outs, VerDay Paint Kit, Snowflake Paper Cuts, Large Antique Brass Eiffel Tower, Mini Bottle Brush Trees, Cream Paper Roses, DecoArt Perfect Crackle Medium I wanted to share a few more Santos Doll photos with you. This cool antique doll above will only cost you around $3,400! And a reproduction (below) will run you between $100-$300 dollars. Well, now you can make your own! I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with! Our Large 3-D Doll stands an impressive 16" tall! I just had to share this awesome altered Santos Doll created by Artist Trent Miller! Trent has participated in some RCAG swaps and we love his work! And I adore what he did with this Santos Doll. As you can see, he started with a reproduction Santos Cage Doll and from there he worked his magic. You can read more about this doll HERE on Trent's blog! Scroll down for some more fantastic photos. Thanks or the Santos inspiration Trent! Download this FREE Valentine ATC Collage Sheet HERE. We love our customers at Retro Cafe Art Gallery and want to thank you for your support! We are THANKFUL for YOU and we are looking forward to a wonderful and creative 2014! xoxo

mixed media, art journaling, altered art by france papillon
We have really wonderful new inspiration for you today prepared by: France - one of the sweetest girls ever - has also prepared some fantastic step-by-step for you so that you can join in our creative mixed media adventure! I started to play with a tag, one of my favorite go to items after my art journal. Looking at the finished tag is a proof that combining some of my favorite mixed media toys and home rusted Mechanicals can only mean fun to me. But once my tag was done, I liked it too much to just leave it like that and put it away. So I came up with a good excuse to have it on display on my table: a stamp binder. And what’s more: a Finnabair Prima stamp binder! Now it acts like an inspiration board, right in front of me on my table! I started with a layer of gesso on a n°8 Manilla tag. Once dried, I placed masking tape on the tag to create a grid. I applied 2 layers of medium: a thick layer of gel medium and a layer of gesso, without waiting for the gel medium to dry. Before I forced it to dry with my heat gun, I took the tape away. Drying it with the heat gun created bubbles in the medium. To add some colour, I diluted Autumn Skies and Golden Bamboo Primary Elements Artist Pigments in spray bottles with water and I sprayed it on the tag. To accentuate the colors, I went over it with Peacock Feather and Vintage Photo Distress ink. I added splatters with the diluted pigments, diluted black acrylic paint and water. I chose my embellishments (which received a home rusting treatment) and burned the edges of a paper left over. I finished it with a plaster strip left over, a home rusted paperclip and some sewing. These plastic liners came with a binder. Some of them have 3 pockets: 2 small ones and 1 big one. I cut the liners in half and added sewing so that every liner had 3 closed sides. Out of the back cover of a paper block, I cut 2 pieces of 12,5 cm x 18,5 cm and covered them with 7Dots Studio Papers and Kraft Cardstock. Using my Cinch, I added a binding ring through everything to create a … Finnabair Stamp binder! Supplies from Mixed Media Place:
