The Pleated Birka Shifts

Recently, I obtained a copy of the following article by Flemming Bau describing his theories about what the Viking age women buried at Birka were dressed: Bau, Flemming. "Seler og Slaeb i Vikingetid: Birka's Kvindedragt i nyt lys." KUML at 13-47 (1981). [The title translates as "Straps and Trains: Birka's Female Costumes in a New Light."] As I have mentioned in this blog before, Bau believes that the Birka graves provide evidence for the wearing of apron dresses with an opening in the center…

Thoughts About Birka Grave 735

There's a textile find in Birka Grave 735 that includes several pieces of silver-brocaded tablet weaving with enough of the fabric to which they were attached that it's clear that the original garment was decorated with multiple, horizontal pieces of the tablet-woven trim. Below is a picture of this part of the actual find, taken from Inga Hägg's article, "Viking Women's Dress at Birka," in Cloth and Clothing in Medieval Europe. As Professor Hägg's caption indicates, she believes that this…

Terminology: The So-Called 'Viking' Apron Dress - The Dreamstress

For my first guest writer for the terminology series, I’m very excited to introduce Cathy Raymond, of Loose Threads: Yet Another Costuming Blog. Cathy’s Medieval and earlier focused blog is one of my favourite textile reads because her area of research is well outside my usual scope, meaning that I learn something new with every post. At the same time, her writing is so thoughtful and considered that it makes me continually realise how timeless and universal textiles are, and how relevant…

Silk textiles from the Persian region were found in the Oseberg ship. The Vikings did not only go West to pillage and plunder. Most of the silk found in the Oseberg ship may have been purchased by honest means from Persia. Vikings Bought Silk From Persia, May Have Reached China

The Norwegian Vikings were more oriented towards the East than we have previously assumed, says Marianne Vedeler, Associate Professor at the Museum of Cultural History, University of Oslo in Norway. After four years of in-depth investigation of the silk trade of the Viking Age, she may change our perceptions of the history of the Norwegian Vikings. The silk trade was far more comprehensive than we have hitherto assumed. Silk textiles from the Persian region were found in the Oseberg ship…

This dress is from a recent excavation of Viking age (around 10th Century) clothing from a chamber grave in Pskov, Russia. Since there were only a few pieces of the actual dress that survived through the years, even the scholars were unable to completely understand or decide how the dress might have been constructed. I had to work with what knowledge I already had and research into various other finds from that time period such as reconstructions, illuminations, and engravings that depicted…
