By the time she died in 1988, the painter Clementine Hunter had become renowned for her simple, idyllic depictions of country life outside Natchitoches, La., that fetched several thousand dollars apiece. Collectors snapped them up. Connoisseurs weren't the only ones to take note of this self-taught folk artist, a descendant of slaves who lived most of her 101 years at Melrose Plantation.

Cane River Lake has a fascinating history. It began as Red River and it was the head of navigation for the Mississippi River/Red River route for many years.

In 1714, French Explorer Louis Juchereau de St. Denis discovered built a small fort the river at that point. Making Natchitoches the oldest permanent settlement in the entire Louisiana Purchase Territory.
