Pinner says: William Morris is famous for his wood-block printed fabrics and wall paper and for spear-heading the Arts & Crafts Movement. Morris owned The Red House in Bexleyheath, UK, where he commissioned Gustav Klimt to create artwork on the walls. Whenever I need to come up some kind of ornate filigree, I turn to my Morris book of prints and designs for inspiration.
Pinner says: T.J. Cobden-Sanderson - fine binding On: Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Poems. London: F. S. Ellis, 1870 Deep blue goatskin, richly gilt to a floral mandorla pattern, with gilt and gauffered edges, and with endpapers of Morris silk brocade; signed and dated 1891. The delicate floral patterns, here using roses and tulips, are inspired by William Morris' designs but do not slavishly copy or follow them.
