Rope Shime tying by one person

These pins show the stages of tying a rope shime to a high pitch using clamps and one person. This stops clam shelling and off centre of body to skin. I find it easy to do, but the clamps are costly, however I use them with my work so if you want to use this technique find some one that would lend them to you. The yellow clamps are not pounds force rated so are not as efficient as the blue clamps.

As well as tying a shime daiko I intend to use the long bar Quick Grip clamps so that I can also re-tie the big Oke Daiko (610 mm diameter and 700 mm high) as you can see it needs it.

Set up that shows how a bit of distortion can be seen in the metal rim under a bit of compression of the clamps. This is less so with rims of bigger diameter. However the blue clamps are 600 pounds force rated and work very well on the thicker sized rims. the yellow ones are not rated and not really suited to this job.

The blue clamp in between the two yellow ones applies the full compression and the yellow ones are tightened up to keep that compression held. The blue one is then released  and used in another position.

Squeeze the black ratchet lever to achieve the compression between the metal rings, the more that this is done the looser the zig zag rope becomes. these need to be tightened as you go round the rim.

Test the sound when all clamps are in position and adjust tension where required.

Still keep the tension on the rope when the knot is being formed. Individuals have their own way of doing this whilst changing hands to tie the knot and pull rope length through.

To release the quick grip clamp use the grey lever. Watch out for the kick given when the high tension is released use the other hand to hold the bar stopping it hit the floor with a bang. Notice that the ropes  take a bit of tension and a bit of movement in the shime ring. this tells that a little bit more force could have been used and the rope tied with a bit more take up on the rope.
