The Eastern Band of Cherokee, which is the only tribe in North Carolina that is recognized by the federal government, is located in western North Carolina in our traditional homelands. Our Tribe consists of approximately 14,000 enrolled members and holds 56,000 acres for our Qualla Boundary.
The word Lakota means “friends” or “alliance of friends.” In the tribe, women are highly revered for they are the ones who give birth to men. The Lakota also believe it is woman who created man because she was incomplete without one. And like Mother Earth, she gives life. “Know your culture and live it,” said Charlotte Black Elk.
