Optical Cardphone Payphones

The Landis & Gyr optical cardphone was first introduced into the UK by British Telecom (BT) in 1981. These cardphones were used as an alternative to coins to make telephone calls from public payphones. They were superseded by new 'chip' card technology in 1996. Credit card sized pieces of plastic named "BT Phonecards" were used in the payphones and were an extremely popular collectors item throughout the nineties.
