    Kalaupapa was chosen as the site of what became the world's first leprosy colony because of its location. Cliffs as high as 2,000 feet cut the settlement off from the rest of Molokai, which is approximately in the center of Hawaii's eight main islands. In 1873, Father Damien began working on Kalaupapa. 600 patients were shipped there. Interesting read on the leprosy patients who called Kalaupapa their home.

    Naupaka: Years ago there were two lovers who were inseparable. Pele took an interest in the man. When he refused her, she became enraged and chased him into the mountains. In an effort to save the young man, Pele’s sisters took pity on him and turned him into a flower. Pele turned her rage towards the other lover, and again her sisters intervened and turned the young woman into a flower. The two half flowers were said to be the separated lovers, only happy when united to be one single bloom.
