Our own Dan Heims, plant hunter, breeder and co-owner of Terra Nova Nurseries, led a talk on new and exciting perennials based on his trips across the globe at the Perennial Plant Association National Convention yesterday morning in Atlanta. His talk, titled "Gems for the Garden," was a fun compilation of some of the newest, most exciting perennials, tropicals and woodies seen today.

Janet Egger is our traditional plant breeder, trial plant manager, as well as our patent writer and manager. She has a B.S. in Botany and a M.S. in Horticulture from the University of California, Davis, and has been breeding perennials since 1983. Janet has been working at Terra Nova Nurseries since October 2000. Her major crops here include Heuchera and Heucherella.

Ken Brown has been at the forefront of Terra Nova Nurseries’ operation since 1992, when he and Dan Heims first formed their successful partnership. With a background in microbiology, Ken helped build Terra Nova Nurseries from its infant stages into one of the largest, new-perennial nurseries in the world. He oversees nursery operations, production, sales and marketing, research and development, laboratory operations, and business relations with other companies, growers and retailers.

Sales representative Larry Finely was interviewed on camera by Kelli Rodda, editor of Nursery Management magazine, about our one-of-a-kind trailing Heucherellas as well as other new plant varieties.

Harini Korlipara is our Lab Manager and one of our Plant Breeders. She brings her expertise in cytogenetics to Terra Nova’s breeding program. She creates improved varieties through advanced techniques. Harini earned a M. Phil. and Ph.D in Cytogenetics and Plant Breeding from Nagarjuna University in India. Before coming to Terra Nova, Harini worked as a scientist in the plant tissue culture industry. Additionally, she has published dozens of articles in professional journals.

Back in March, our plant guru, Dan Heims, made an expert guest appearance on The Martha Stewart Show for two segments. The first segment included a walk-around interview between Martha and Dan, during which he discussed plant breeding, discovery, and tissue culture. The second segment focused on Terra Nova Nurseries new plants for 2011.
