Looking for a hidden word inside a bigger word is a great decoding strategy for new readers. No book includes this reading strategy better than Bernard Most's "There's an Ant in Anthony". Number sense and learning the way around a Hundreds Chart is important learning for your first grade students. Having a helpful and consistent way to assess their number sense throughout the year is important. These probes include 4 seasonal assessments per month for the entire calendar year. Students simply fill in each column indicating numbers for plus and minus one and ten. Perfect info for all students and especially useful for RtI data tracking. Timed or untimed...just be consistent.
Number Sense can be tricky to quantify for your youngest students. Here is one way to assess and monitor year round. Do your students understand their way around a 120's Board? 4 probes per month for the entire year. Help compare apples to apples, month to month. Use for assessment and use for math centers as well. This is such a telling assessment and activity. No 2 students need the same copy with 4 different versions!
If you monitor writing progress of your students considering their total words written, correct writing sequences, and words spelled correctly but are constantly scrambling for a great writing prompt, take a closer look at this.  Included you will not only find a two page record sheet to copy for each student, but great writing prompts to use throughout the school year.  You can then graph the information so students can keep track of their own progress or you can document for RtI purposes.
