Hello there! So it's a cold, gloomy November afternoon here in London and after a day of attempting to write a uni essay, I decided on a topic for this blog post: 50s fashion photography. In between flicking through English textbooks and scribbling away making notes, I found myself daydreaming about how much I (weirdly) miss having to take photos. I took photography at A Level so the majority of my free time up until May this year was spent thinking about/taking photos. What prompted the nostalgic daydreaming was probably my recent (and definitely unnecessary) purchase of Vogue. Whenever I flick through the glossy pages of Vogue or Elle, I'm always drawn to the photographs that are in black and white; probably because they're reminiscent of the elegant, opulent fashion photography synonymous with the 50s that I absolutely adore. Going back to my Photography A Level, I did part of my coursework on 50s fashion photography so I thought I'd just share some of my favourite images by the renowned fashion photographers Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and Horst P. Horst. Shrena xox

Credited by many as the first supermodel, even though she was never called that in her lifetime, Lisa Fonssagrives was the first widely known fashion model. Born Lisa Birgitta Bernstone in 1911 in Uddevalla, Sweden, she took up painting, sculpting and dancing as a child. She went on to Mary Wigman's school in Berlin where she studied art and dance. After returning to Sweden, she opened a dance school. She moved from Sweden to Paris to train for ballet. While in Paris in 1936, photographer Willy Maywald discovered her in an elevator and asked her to model hats for him. Fonssagrives' photographs were then sent to Vogue and Vogue photographer, Horst P. Horst took some test photographs of her, which were to launch her stellar fashion career. She was to describe her modelling as "still dancing". Before Fonssagrives came to the United States in 1939, she was already a top model. Her elegant blonde image appeared on the cover of many magazines during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, including Town & Country, Life, Time, Vogue, and the original Vanity Fair. She epitomized a very noble period of fashion and couture, giving a classical dignity to anything she wore. She was reported as "the highest paid, highest praised, high fashion model in the business". Fonssagrives once described herself as a "good clothes hanger". She worked with many famous fashion photographers including Georges Hoyningen-Huene, Man Ray, Horst, Erwin Blumenfeld, George Platt Lynes, Richard Avedon, and Edgar de Evia. Unusually, she continued to be a fashion model when she was past 40. She married Parisian dancer and photographer, Fernand Fonssagrives, in 1935; they divorced and she later married another leading photographer, Irving Penn, in 1950. She was a frequent subject of Penn's photographs for Vogue magazine, particularly his studies of French haute couture. Together, the Penns represented an extraordinary photographer - model team. In the 1960s, Fonssagrives became a sculptor working in marble, bronze and fiberglass. She died in 1992, aged 80, in New York, leaving behind a stunning legacy of art and photographs. Hmmm... how to look chick at the train station in the morning when you're barely awake, there's a throng of people swarming the platform and you're worried you've got your purse, your coat and your MP3 player still with you?? IMPOSSIBLE! That's why I love this pic I guess... Total uthopia... What do you think?? Do you look this stylish in the mornings?? By the way, Mary Flower: I travelled with your mum this morning, I hadn't seen her in ages! She actually resembled someone totally cool and stylish like the lady in the photo! Photo credits: Passing in Victoria Station, London (1951), from Double Takes, via A Cup of Jo.

This gigantic book by Pamela Golbin (author of the excellent overview "Fashion Designers") really tells the story of two houses of Balenciaga - the original, helmed by the great Cristobal Balenciaga, and the modern-day couturier. The real heart of the book for vintage-fashion mavens, however, is the first half of the book, detailing the work of the illustrious Senor Balenciaga. The gentleman was probably the finest designer of the "New Look" era after M. Dior himself, and worked for much longer than Dior did. He excelled particularly, in my own opinion, at lush, silken, flowing gowns, which are copiously - and beautifully - detailed here. It's all here; biographical information, design sketches, behind-the-scenes photographs, catwalk shots. www.amazon.com Balenciaga Paris by Pamela Golbin and Fabien Baron (Paperback - Sept. 25, 2006). Cristóbal Balenciaga in 1927 Harper's Bazaar, December 1950 (photograph by Richard Avedon) Vogue, September 1950 (photograph by Irving Penn) Harper's Bazaar, October 1952 (photograph by Richard Avedon) Vogue, September 1953 (photograph by Richard Avedon) Vogue Paris, May 1966 (photograph by William Klein) Further reading: Balenciaga Paris by Pamela Golbin and Fabien Baron (Paperback - Sept. 25, 2006) Balenciaga Paris traces the designer's collections year by year, from 1937 to 2006, using photos, press cuttings, sketches, and other archival material. The book explores two main periods in depth: 1937-1968, when Cristobal Balenciaga made his name during Paris's golden age of fashion; and 1996-2006, charting the dramatic revival of the House of Balenciaga under Nicolas Ghesquière, one of the most widely admired and celebrated new designers in contemporary fashion. He has co-directed the book's production with Pamela Golbin, curator at the Musée de la Mode et du Textile, Paris, who has compiled the text. Described by Christian Dior as "the master of us all," Balenciaga's bold genius with cut, line, and fabric mark him out as one of the most daring and original designers in the world of haute couture. His virtuoso command of technique and imaginative exuberance recall his Spanish roots as well as assuring his place in the pantheon of twentieth-century style and elegance. 280 illustrations, 200 in color. I was always inspired by vintage magazines. While I was looking at Vogue, I found pictures taken by Irving Pen, an amazing photographer who brought most beautiful and memorable photographs in the history of magazines. For the layout of my magazine I want to mix the modern magazine layout with the old ones. I'm starting to look through old editions of Vogue to start something unique and new. Images play an important role in magazine layout. I'm planning to take photography courses in order to take my own images for my thesis project next yer. Irving Penn is definitely one of my inspiration. here are some of his amazing fashion editorial assignments. His unique style of fashion photography used natural light rather than all the expensive studio lighting, favoring a simple black or white background to bring out specific features of his subjects.Irving Penn played a significant role in the evolution of fashion photography. Here are some of his amazing fashion editorial assignments.

The origins of 1950s fashion began with Christian Dior’s “New Look,” in 1947. The “New Look” consisted of a below-mid-calf length, full-skirt, pointed bust, small waist, and rounded shoulder line. The look became popular post WWII.
