Students learned about the Japanese principles of Notan which means "dark light," before creating their cut paper designs. They concentrated on creating balanced designs with equal amounts of positive and negative space as they expanded the square. They also concentrated on using color contrast.
Japanese Notan Design: Positive and Negative Space In this lesson we discussed the Japanese concept of Notan, the interaction between positive (light) and negative (dark) space. We looked at designs that included positive and negative shapes and then created our own designs.
