Calla Lilies & Corsets: Rare 1820 Corset

1838-1840   White cotton sateen quilted corset with needle running in channels. Four gussets in center front, breast high on the torso. Channel for busk in center front, open at center back for insertion and removal. Busk held in place with pins, holes are visible where pins were used. Drawstring around the top edge of the corset. Candle wicking in channels, or needle run, forms the structure- a stiffening that pulls the body up and in. Decorative silk embroidery.
