We can't do science properly if our models of the world ignore things that we know exist. Plenty of chemical elements are very rare, but we list them on the table anyway, because they exist. Likewise, if we ignore the identities and experiences of even small segments of the population, we can't do the humanities properly (or be good people) either. Without carbon, we can't model the most basic aspects of biology. And how well would we understand biology if we left out all elements that make up less than 0.1% of the human body? We'd leave out at least 17 elements which are necessary for life. Source: Max Tohline, a.k.a., 10 O'CLOCK DOT
