Writing about capitalism and nationalism, Terence Hopkins and Immanuel Wallerstein once observed that these two "broad organizing tendencies" of the modern world, "are in principle deeply contradictory." They forged national identities in part thru religion & casting out ppl whom they believed didnt belong, such as non-Christians. New national identities also made it easier to justify enslaving…

"The Japs aren't as cross-eyed as you think" "I count myself lucky. I just lost a leg. There were eighty of us. I'm one of four who survived. That's paying at the rate of 95%. When the Japs can do that with one shell, you've got to agree they're not as cross-eyed as some folks make out. Take it from me, they're tough! Thank the lord they lack our imagination and initiative. We can't have too many ships, ships with a great big wallop..Credit: Revere Copper and Bras’s War Bonds, 1944
"Who's Absent? Is It You?" British WWI propaganda was initially used to enlist able bodied men to join the fight. Later, the propaganda changed to encourage people to purchase war bonds.

It can happen here My dear son, I am so sorry you are going to have to live under Communism. It seemed to come so quickly. I didn't think their lies could win. I guess we were so busy with other things. Not enough of us spoke up for freedom when we had the chance. | You can speak up for freedom right now... Your dollars are needed to help build the American Freedom Center at Valley Forge. You can speak up for freedom by contributing freedom bricks...

Nationalism--almost by definition--is a conformist ideology. Like a religion, it demands its followers adhere to tradition and display its symbols. By contrast, biker cultures typically present a rebellious face and claim to eschew the trappings of tradition. Against all odds, it seems, bikers in the U.S. are almost always ardent nationalists, as if simultaneously claiming to be rebellious and free to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance while ridiculing their peers for doing the same.
Everything about Trump's COVID diagnosis is rocket fuel for 'patriotism'
A reminder to all Americans that the net effect of our prime minister catching COVID-19 was that it prompted a surge of patriotic support. From which he emerged with renewed popularity. Which enabled him to tear up key functions of the state. It also silenced press & parliament at key moment in crisis from asking critical questions. And when it was announced he was moving to intensive care was moment of national shock. Everything about this is rocket fuel for 'patriotism' Donald Trump has…

You Can Be a Patriot Without Loving America
We argue that we're the best country yet know very little about the state of the nation. In September of 2017, the Annenberg Public Policy Centers Constitution Day Civics Survey revealed 53% of Americans incorrectly think illegal immigrants do not love any rights under the U.S. Constitution... 37% can't name any rights guaranteed under the First Amendment... ...and only 26% can name all three government branches Artist: Alex Graudins
You Can Be a Patriot Without Loving America
"The patriot is proud of his country fro what it does, and the nationalist is proud of his country no matter what it does; the first attitude creates a feeling of responsibility, but the second a feeling of blind arrogance that leads to war." ~ Sydney J. Harris, journalist, "Strictly Journal," 1953 Artist: Alex Graudins

"I would argue for a studied pride, a gratitude, that understands all that was sacrificed, that we could have easily tilted the other way, that the experiment is still, even now, fragile, and remains in constant need of the lost 19th century concept of improvement." ~ Ta-Nehisi Coates, writer "Patriotism," The Atlantic, 2011 Artist: Alex Graudins

Nothing shows devotion for one's country more than giving your life for it. Yet veteran lives are used to argue against any violation of American cultural norms, despite their oath to defend all rights--freedom of expression included. "I can tell you, speaking for three generations of my family. it is PRECISELY for men like Kaepernick, and his right to peacefully protest injustice, that we were willing to serve." ~ Michael Sands, Green Beret, Sep. 25, 2017.
