Neville Alexander (1936-2012) was a South African social theorist, educationist & activist, who was imprisoned w/ Nelson Mandala. Alexander argued education would lead to the liberation of SA. He further argued that developing African languages was essential because English & Afrikaans—the W. Germanic languages whose imposition was the trigger of the Soweto uprising—were not adequate for higher ed. Many Blacks werent making it to graduation because they lacked proficiency in the idioms

Sigmund Freud (1856 - 1939) Sociologists cannot rightfully claim Sigmund Freud as one of their own, but Freud's theories have nonetheless had reverberations throughout the discipline. Jacques Lacan drew upon the ideas of Freud's psychoanalysis in his work on linguistics and literature. Freud's influence can also be found in the work of feminist sociologists, both as an object of ridicule and inspiration.

Howard S. Becker (1928 - ) is a sociologist who is known for his contributions to the sociological study of deviance and art. In the book for which he is most famous, "Outsiders" (1963), Becker sets out foundational ideas behind Labeling theory. As a graduate of the University of Chicago, Becker is considered part of the second Chicago School of Sociology.
