Direct Drive Delights

Things come full circle, as vinyl enthusiasts know. Not only is vinyl back, but Direct Drive turntables which became very unfashionable in English speaking countries in the 1980s, are back. They do offer their own strengths, a dynamic that belt drives often struggle with.

Technics SL1210 / Wand Tonearm / Nagaoka MP200
Alvin's classic Technics SL1210 turntable should sound dynamic with Wand Classic 10.3in tonearm and Nagaoka MP200. (His 12in Wand tonearm awaits a PTP Lenco)
Andy's Technics SP10 / Wand 12in / AT09 project is now finally running and sounding great!
Sumiko Bludpoint Special, Wand Tonearm and Technics SL1200 featuring in an interesting philosophical audio blog; http://www.thefactoryaudio.com/blog/
Hose from Australia has a 10.3in Wand Classic on his Technics and says "I am using a Goldring 1006 cart, Clearaudio Basic+ phono stage, Burson Conductor V2 headphone/preamp, Quad 909 power amp, ATC scm11 stand speakers. Sound is clear and fast imo, used a meter to adjust azimuth, fine tuned the alignment by ear but seems to line up at the offset angle. "
Liked this birds-eye photo of Juan Paolo's Technics SL1210 which shows well how a Wand 10.3in can be squeezed on. JP said "Sounds wonderful, very detailed "
Classic! A classic Micro Sieki DD-40 with The Wand Classic mounted. US owner describes the combo a "beautiful" to listen to. Denon 103 cartridge
Cool looking setup! Andy already has a 10.3in Wand tonearm on his Technics SL1200, he now has this immaculate Technics SP15 with a Wand 12in Tonearm, it had the right proportions to look and sound great (Audio Technica AT OC9 II)

Dave lives in the US and is an audio adventurer, not only has he fitted The Wand 10.3in tonearm to his Technics SL1210 M5G but he has had great fun trying all sorts of cartridges, commenting; So far I've had a Shure SC35C, Zu Denon 103R, Shure M55E and a Stanton Fluxvalve 380 installed and they have all performed great. Way better than these budget carts should and better than any of them have performed for me in the past. --Dave Zu Denon 103 shown here.

-Denon DP-80 & Wand 12in Tonearm; The round form of the Denon DP-80 indicates it’s broadcast studio intent and for the modern user makes ideal for usage with a 12in Wand Tonearm® as Luxembourg resident Albert found.

-Denon DP3000; Tasmania is a small place but has a high concentration of Wand Tonearms®. Frank was one of the first customers with his Denon DP3000 / Benz Micro Gold and commenting “…what a difference. it is a dream arm. everything has cleaned up bass top end and mid range unbelievable. the sound stage is much more defined 3d like, sold pinpoint imagery…”

-Kenwood KD600; Many years ago, as student interested in audio, one of the turntables my friends lusted after was a Kenwood L07D. The KD600 lacks some of the tech drama of the L07D but has enough of the basic design details like the artificial granite plinth to be a good turntable in anyone’s book. Here with an Ortofon 2M Blue mounted on The Wand Tonearm®.

-Technics SL120 / Yamaha MC9 The SL120 was the non-DJ precursor to the SL1200, here fitted the now legendary Yamaha MC9 cartridge mounted on The Wand Unipivot Tonearm®.

-Technics SL1200 Mk2; It’s nice when customers become friends and Andy has been great at helping develop the Instructions for fitting The Wand Tonearm® onto Technics turntables. Andy has used cartridges as diverse as Audio Technica AT09 (Shown here), Ortofon 2M Black and Denon 103. Andy commented “To cut a long story short, I have really been enjoying the extra detail and just sheer get up and go that it provides.”

-Wand 10.3in arm on Technics SL1200 mk2 The newly released 10.3in Wand Unipivot Tonearm® has been explicitly designed to be the longest arm that you can fit on a Technics SL1200 family turntable (or others like Linn Sondek), this has 2/3 of the gain of a 12in arm without the hassles.
