AKA, control vs. randomness. All of the visual arts betray varying degrees of both. The basic requirement for order or control is context, whether it be a frame, a wall, the horizon or the Milky Way. On the other extreme – chaos, randomness and movement are responsible for change, variety and rhythm; without which, order would stifle life itself. Unimpeded chaos would inevitably suffer life as well. In-between the two extremes of order and chaos: Living. Managing the two extremes: Design.

Joan Miro was an inventive child long into his 80's. His paintings are usually layers of fantasy rendered in bold color and organic shapes and line. His style is less about order and more about other types of imagined forces. Occasionally we see a Miro composition where a rhythmical association of elements (here, it's the thick black lines; the small colored ellipses) embraces unity in a spontaneous but controlled manner. Notice too, the elegant variety of proportioned areas of negative…

The organic blasting of splatters is countered by the geometry of the working area or the picture frame. even the wall itself. In the end, it becomes an issue of contrasts. Jackson Pollock | MoMA

American, 1912–1956. In 1947 Jackson Pollock arrived at a new mode of working that brought him international fame. His method consisted of flinging and dripping thinned enamel paint onto an unstretched canvas laid on the floor of his studio. This direct, physical engagement with his materials welcomed gravity, velocity, and improvisation into the artistic process, and allowed line and color to stand alone, functioning entirely independently of form. His works, which came to be known as “drip…

Illustration ("North South") Published by the 'New West' Magazine to May, one dollar - Illustration by Mick Haggerty (b. Sisters Magazine, Visual Metaphor, New West, Lp Cover, Man Ray, Art For Art Sake, Ad Design, Graphic Design, The Bikini

Balanced weight, approximate symmetry and contrast (both visual and narrative) begin to define this illustration by Mick Haggerty. Fracturing within the image, imbues the overall effect with a sense of humorous sense of duality and (remember, this is earthquake country) irony.
