Shadow of Night: A Novel (All Souls Trilogy) - The 2nd book in the trilogy. Not nearly as good as the first, but worth reading all the same.
Shadow of Night | Deborah Harkness. Book 2 of the All Souls Trilogy. If possible, Shadow of Night is even better than the first book, Discovery of Witches, especially if you are a fan of historical fiction. Harkness, an historian, has impeccably researched her subject and this book is entirely delightful. Very highly recommended! ~SN

All Time Best Earth Day Books: The Lorax (Classic Seuss). First published in 1971, this eco-minded classic by Dr. Seuss is still a great read for Earth Day. When the greedy Once-ler cuts down the lovely Truffula Trees for the sake of manufacturing, the fuzzy yellow Lorax speaks up "for the trees have no tongues." The story reminds us all that Earth's beauty could be fleeting without our help. Read together or Grade 1+

Book Review: Eat and Run by Scott Jurek
This is actually a new book by ultra-marathoner Scott Jurek, so it's not technically a "bike book," but it's getting pretty good reviews from the fitness community. I believe Scott is a vegan.

Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling unveils the story behind the art's making, a story rife with all the drama of a modern-day soap opera. Only $3.97 from Thrift Books.

Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling. I wish I had read this before I went to see the Sistene Chapel. It brought the whole story to life.
In 1508, despite strong advice to the contrary, the powerful Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the newly restored Sistine Chapel. With little experience as a painter (though famed for his sculpture David), Michelangelo was reluctant to begin the massive project. Great, in depth look at the personal life of an absolute genius!
Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling by Ross King. A fantastic book related to Architecture, Art, and History.
For the art history lovers: I never tire of this book. I can read it over and over again.

Geraldine Brooks, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of March, has turned the intriguing but sparely detailed history of this precious volume into an emotionally rich, thrilling fictionalization that retraces its turbulent journey.Check out People of the Book, now $3.97 from Thrift Books.
Sarajevo Haggadah, Worth Reading, Books Club, Books Worth, Favorite Books, Historical Fiction, People, True Stories, Geraldin Brooks
Book Review: People of the Book: A Novel by Geraldine Brooks. A very nicely done historical fiction book that tells the history of the Sarejevo Hagadah, a real Jewish prayer book for the Passover Seder.
People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of March, the journey of a rare illuminated manuscript through centuries of exile and war In 1996, Hanna Heath, an Australian rare-book expert, is offered the job of a lifetime: analysis and conservation of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, which has been rescued from Serb shelling during the Bosnian war. Priceless and beautiful, the book is one of the earliest Jewish volumes ever to be illuminated with images. When Hanna, a caustic loner with a passion for her work, discovers a series of tiny artifacts in its ancient binding—an insect wing fragment, wine stains, salt crystals, a white hair—she begins to unlock the book’s mysteries. The reader is ushered into an exquisitely detailed and atmospheric past, tracing the book’s journey from its salvation back to its creation. In Bosnia during World War II, a Muslim risks his life to protect it from the Nazis. In the hedonistic salons of fin-de-siècle Vienna, the book becomes a pawn in the struggle against the city’s rising anti-Semitism. In inquisition-era Venice, a Catholic priest saves it from burning. In Barcelona in 1492, the scribe who wrote the text sees his family destroyed by the agonies of enforced exile. And in Seville in 1480, the reason for the Haggadah’s extraordinary illuminations is finally disclosed. Hanna’s investigation unexpectedly plunges her into the intrigues of fine art forgers and ultra-nationalist fanatics. Her experiences will test her belief in herself and the man she has come to love. Inspired by a true story, People of the Book is at once a novel of sweeping historical grandeur and intimate emotional intensity, an ambitious, electrifying work by an acclaimed and beloved author.
PEOPLE OF THE BOOK by Geraldine Brooks - one of my absolute favorite books - stories within a story and based on real events- READ THIS if you love history, mysteries, etc.
worth reading again.

The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell, the author of Cloud Atlas. "Every page is overfull with language, events, and characters, exuberantly saturated in the details of the time and the place but told from a knowing and undeniably modern perspective. It's a story that seems to contain a thousand worlds in one."
Worth Reading, Jacobs De, De Zoet, Autumn, Books Club, Books Worth, David Mitchell, Novels, Cloud Atlas
David Mitchell is a masterful storyteller. I was captivated by Cloud Atlas and didn't think that he could top it. And then came along "The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet." It's not that "Thousand Autumns" is necessarily better (the two novels are so remarkably different that it's difficult to compare them) but it once again showcases the brilliance of Mitchell's writing and his ability to transport a reader to a different place and time so entirely and so beautifully.
Book club selection. Lots of words I didn't know, but the second half especially was good reading.
