Book review: Alice Hoffman’s ‘Dovekeepers’ builds on lives of Jewish heroines - The Washington Post
The Dovekeepers: A Novel by Alice Hoffman #ThriftBooksTop10 The Dovekeepers is my All-Time Favorite book. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to read something that matters. A deep, meaningful and perhaps mostly true story that will stay with you and make you think about it for a very long time. *PS I just noticed you can buy this book at Thriftbooks for less than 4.00 right now - so for the love of all that's good, get a copy NOW! :)
I would highly recommend this book. Amazing! The Dovekeepers, Alice Hoffman
The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman. One of my favorite books of all time
The Dovekeepers - Alice hoffman
also on my to-read list
A majestic novel of four women facing life and death Back Cover: Over five years in the writing, The Dovekeepers is Alice Hoffman's most ambitious and mesmerizing novel, a tour de force of imagination and research, set in ancient Israel. In 70 C.E., nine hundred Jews held out for months against armies of Romans on Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert. According to the ancient historian Josephus, two women and five children survived. Based on this tragic and iconic event, Hoffman's novel is a spellbinding tale of four extraordinarily bold, resourceful, and sensuous women, each of whom has come to Masada by a different path. Yael's mother died in childbirth, and her father, an expert assassin, never forgave her for that death. Revka, a village baker's wife, watched the horrifically brutal murder of her daughter by Roman soldiers; she brings to Masada her young grandsons, rendered mute by what they have witnessed. Aziza is a warrior's daughter, raised as a boy, a fearless rider and an expert marksman who finds passion with a fellow soldier. Shirah, born in Alexandria, is wise in the ways of ancient magic and medicine, a woman with uncanny insight and power. The lives of these four complex and fiercely independent women intersect in the desperate days of the siege. All are dovekeepers, and all are also keeping secrets-about who they are, where they come from, who fathered them, and whom they love. The Dovekeepers is Alice Hoffman's masterpiece. The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman is women’s literary and historical fiction at its very best. From first page to last, I loved this novel. In A.D. 70, the story depicts the struggles of four very wise, very resilient women whose lives are interwoven when they arrive in Masada and are assigned the task of taking care of the doves in King Herod’s palace. After years of intense research, Ms. Hoffman weaves historical fact into fiction as she tries to recreate a tragic event where 900 people chose to commit suicide rather than submit to Roman rule. The novel is divided into four sections – one for each of the women – and unfolds through their eyes. Each woman has suffered some form of turmoil or tragedy. Although the plot is intricate and complex, the story is easy to follow and quickly draws you in. It is Ms. Hoffman’s talent as a writer that lifts the novel into vividness and passion. A tale full of mystery and secrets, mothers and daughters, love and hate, and complex human relationships. This is one novel to read slowly and enjoy every word. It would be an ideal novel for book clubs or an exchange of gifts between mothers and daughters. A profound statement on the power and resilience and honour! Highly recommended.I LOVE COMMENTS

One of the best book I´ve read. Together we lifted our feet and stepped into the unknown"—the thrilling sequel to the New York Times bestseller A Discovery of Witches Deborah Harkness exploded onto the… Second book in series.
Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness -- book 2 of All Souls Trilogy, due out in July 2012 - Can't wait.
Shadow of Night | Deborah Harkness. Book 2 of the All Souls Trilogy. If possible, Shadow of Night is even better than the first book, Discovery of Witches, especially if you are a fan of historical fiction. Harkness, an historian, has impeccably researched her subject and this book is entirely delightful. Very highly recommended! ~SN

Recently finished: Shadow of Night [Deborah Harkness] Book 2 of the All Souls Trilogy
Can’t get enough of London? Deborah Harkness’s ‘All Souls Trilogy’ takes you to Elizabethan England. She picks her favorite books.
I apologize that it took so long to get a book read! I think that this factor plays a lot into the review of this book. Without further ado. . . Here it is: Shadow of Night: Book 2 of The All Souls Trilogy This book took a very long time to read. I can't blame it completely on the book because there were some other factors such as life in general, starting a blog for cooking and food porn and also a new discovery of a game on the I-Pad called Spelltower. I will tell you NOT to check it out if you like word games because it is going to be my downfall. I digress. . . I would like to point out that I really LOVED the first book in this series - A Discovery of Witches. Vampires and witches were described in new ways and did not fall into the typical Hollywood/teen fiction world that we have seen in recent years. This author must truly be brilliant. Deborah Harkness pulls elements of historical fact and literary finds with traditions from a variety of cultures to truly make the world, past and present, come alive and from a variety of perspectives. I think my big problem was that the first book was so wonderful and ended with a cliffhanger. Then I waited. . . There was no Book 2 when I completed it and I went on to other things. If you haven't read Book 1 you are very lucky because you can read these back to back. I spent so much time trying to retrace/recall what happened in Book 1 while reading Shadow of Night that I know I'm missing entire parts in the continuum. I also didn't like the male vs. female battle that went on for control sometimes. Apparently Matthew in the past is not as liberal and understanding as present day Matthew! Good parts of this book that make it ultimately go on the list of books worth reading: 1. I really like these characters. They have flaws and seem human even if they have supernatural powers. 2. I liked the time travel and the glimpses into Elizabethan England and France as well as Prague. From my perspective getting a new back story for the Golem was pretty cool all on its own. 3. We learned a lot about Ashmole 782, the book at the center of this time traveling quest. Until I downloaded this photo from Amazon, I had not read any other reviews and it sounds like a lot of people agree with me. This book is not as good as the first but necessary to bring us to the conclusion for Book 3 which is not yet set with a release date (it might not yet be done according to the author's website). If you haven't started this series maybe just wait? The story of the first book is also going to be a movie. . . So final verdict: On the list of "books worth reading" but with some conditions!

I’m so excited to be part of another TLC book tour with the new Karen White novel, The Beach Trees. I think I have read every Karen White novel and have enjoyed them all, but The Beach Trees is my favorite so far. In the Beach Trees, Julie has been handed a very unexpected inheritance: five year old Beau, the son of her close yet mysterious friend Monica. With no friends or family to provide support, she moves from NYC to the Gulf Coast beach home also willed to her. Her despair and fear overwhelm her when she discovers this beach home in utter ruin after Hurricane Katrina. She is left with no home and only one clue to as to how to find any of Beau’s relations, a portrait painted by Julie’s famous grandfather. Julie finds herself struggling to understand why Monica would have left her childhood home behind 10 years before. And why, inexplicably, Julie and Monica’s pasts seem to intertwine. While each of Karen’s novels have their own feel and style, Karen stays consistent with three elements. First, each work has a subtle romance, sweet and believable, but not overwhelming to the plot. Second, a historic home is usually a "character" of great importance. Her love of old American architecture is contagious. And third, each work holds a riveting mystery, only to be solved when the characters search for answers within their (often long forgotten) past. The present and past blend together to bring insight and answers to those struggling to find their place in the world and find solace in their own loss. One paragraph in The Beach Trees sums up my thoughts on the Karen White philosophy. “...some things should never be forgotten. Whether it’s a memory we should learn from or a memory of something precious, sort of like life’s rewind button. Sometimes that’s all we have left.” The Beach Trees is a story of loss, and the human spirit’s need to rebuild from the rubble. Poignant and hopeful, I highly recommend adding it to your summer reading list.
The Beach Trees (Karen White)
The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell, the author of Cloud Atlas. "Every page is overfull with language, events, and characters, exuberantly saturated in the details of the time and the place but told from a knowing and undeniably modern perspective. The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet A Novel (Book Club Kit) : Mitchell, David : The author of Cloud Atlas 's most ambitious novel yet, for the readers of Ishiguro, Murakami, and, of course, David Mitchell. The year is 1799, the place Dejima, the high-walled, fan-shaped artificial island that is the Japanese Empire's single port and sole window to the world. It is also the farthest-flung outpost of the powerful Dutch East Indies Company. To this place of superstition and swamp fever, crocodiles and courtesans, earthquakes and typhoons, comes Jacob de Zoet. The young, devout and ambitious clerk must spend five years in the East to earn enough money to deserve the hand of his wealthy fiancée. But Jacob's intentions are shifted, his character shaken and his soul stirred when he meets Orito Aibagawa, the beautiful and scarred daughter of a Samurai, midwife to the island's powerful magistrate. In this world where East and West are linked by one bridge, Jacob sees the gaps shrink between pleasure and piety, propriety and profit. Magnificently written, a superb mix of historical research and heedless imagination, The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet is a big and unforgettable book that will be read for years to come.
