Lesson 8: Know Thyself
The following phrase is found on the temple at Dephi. The student can write this Greek phrase into his lesson book. The full phrase says, “O Man (anthropos) know thyself and thou shalt know the world; O Man know the world and thou shalt know thyself.” One can see in this phrase the sense that the human being is the world writ small and that the world is the human being writ large.
Teaching Ancient Greek Mythology
This fourth great cultural period in the evolution of humanity is introduced through its primary myths that includes stories of the Olympian gods and goddesses, heroes such as Hercules and Prometheus, as well as the great world epic Homer’s Odyssey. This study will be followed in the sixth grade with Greek history proper and the civilization that developed in Athens and Sparta.
Discover the Triangles
In this lesson the student will see that three intersecting lines will create a triangle. The result is an artistic representation of various kinds of triangles that has a quality reminiscent of some modernist paintings.
Geometry and Number
The student is introduced to the basic qualities of geometrical plane figures (such as “the sum of the interior angles of a triangle equal 180°”) through artistic activities. One also learns number systems from the ancient world, binary numbers, how to estimate, reckoning averages, and gaining facility with graphing and the interpretation of data.
The Culture of Ancient Egypt
This study continues the story of the rise of civilization along the Nile. The student learns of the overarching myth of this culture, that of Osiris and Isis, and is introduced to the Egyptian pantheon. The construction of the pyramids, hieroglyphic writing, mummification and many other aspects of Egyptian civilization are studied through learning activities.
Introducing Algae and Seaweed
This teacher’s manual constitutes the life science study in the fifth grade providing 6 to 8 weeks of lessons and activities with an overview of the whole of the plant kingdom. One climbs the ladder of the plant kingdom from fungi, lichen, and mosses, up to the conifers, and finally to the monocotyledons such as the grasses and lilies, arriving at the most developed and complex flowering plants-the dicotyledons.

Sample Lesson on the Fertile Crescent
We described in the book on Ancient Persia those reasons why it is best to leave mapmaking for the end of the fifth year, and remain in the realm of an imaginative picture of geography for the early part of the year. In such a case, an imaginative picture of a huge crescent shape of fertile land where early civilizations arose can appeal to the student of this age far more so than a map laid out on the grid of latitude and longitude.
The Ancient Culture in Persia
The great culture that followed ancient India takes place in the mountainous plateaus of Persia. Here, the holy book of Zoroastrianism, the Zend-Avesta, tells of the mighty Zarathustra who, following 20 years of solitude in the mountains, descends to the valleys teaching mankind to till the earth and build dwellings. Student activities include composition writing, color pencil drawing, dramatic depictions of the life of Zarathustra, and form drawings.
Brahma the Creator Main Lesson Activity: A Creation Painting
The above illustration is one of many paintings that could accompany this block. A similar illustration could be drawn with color pencil in the main lesson book to accompany the Dictation/Writing Activity.
Ancient India
Four great historical and cultural epochs within the course of the evolution of human consciousness are studied in the fifth grade year. One begins with two great ancient cultures from India and Persia that preceded the cradle of civilization as it appeared in Mesopotamia. Within the study of ancient India, stories of some of the principal deities and avatars such as Krishna and Rama are introduced and the development of Indian culture.
