Rooting hydrangea cuttings - Locate a stem of softwood and cut a shoot that has several leaves. Trim it into 5-inch-long pieces that each have a leaf toward the top. Remove extra leaves; then cuts the remaining leaf in half to minimize evaporation (and the need for watering). Dip the other end in powdered rooting hormone; plant the cuttings in trays filled with a soilless mix and perlite. Cover with a plastic bag, and stash in a shady location, misting regularly to keep the leaf hydrated.

Grow Some Privacy Keep privacy in mind as you design your small space. No one wants to have the neighbors (even if they are great people) looking over their shoulder when they relax outdoors. That's why a fence or screen to shield the view is essential. But don't just put up a fence and leave it at that. Grow something over the structure to add color and dimension. Here, English ivy trained in a diamond espalier pattern turns a plain screen into a piece of living art.

Add outlets at 16-ft. intervals Lay perforated drainage tubing at base Water-soaked soil is the worst enemy of retaining walls because it exerts enormous pressure behind the wall. Adding good drainage behind block or stone walls is crucial for long-lasting, bulge-free walls. Start by laying perforated plastic drainage tubing along the base of the wall slightly above ground level so it can drain to daylight. Slope the tubing about 1/4 in. per foot.
Show this to Grandma. Maybe it will help with her retaining wall issues. Landscaping: Tips for Your Backyard Adding walls and paths to your landscape transforms it into something truly special. Here's a collection of pro building tricks for easier, faster and better path and wall construction.

How to Map Out Your Plan If you don't want to lift a finger, go with a pro. (Find one through the website of the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals.) But homeowners willing to invest a little of their own time and energy can save a bundle by following the advice of Mark Piantedosi, owner of Commonwealth Landscape Lighting in Acton, Massachusetts. Here are his top design tips: Trees (well, bullet, or flood, and downlight). When aiming ground lights straight up into foliage, be sure to also bathe the trunk in light. If you don't, the uplit crown will look like a hovering UFO. When illuminating foliage from above, place two 20-watt downlights as high in a tree as possible and point them so that their beams do not cross. Planting Beds (garden). Place fixtures no closer than 20 feet apart. "You want pools of light to guide your eye from one plant to the next, not continuous illumination." Home Facade (bullet and wash).Fit bullet lights with bulbs that have 12-degree beam spreads, and aim them at the corners of your house or architectural details; softer wash lights can fill in the space between them. Garden Walls (well, bullet, or flood).Position fixtures close to the base so that the beams bring textures into sharp relief. Focal Points (flood, bullet, or wash). Highlight an element that deserves attention—such as a fountain, a tree swing, or an arbor—by aiming two or more lights at it. The crossing beams reduce the harsh shadows that form when only one shines on an object. My husband drilled a hole in each bar and hung it on some hooks he created. Worked like a charm. And at the end of summer, he simply took the bars down, took them in the house."

Clearing out the overgrowth of shrubs and building an entryway bump-out with a peaking portico over the front door gave this home much needed dimension and personality. Low rock walls flank wide steps accented with stone, beefing up the front door's presence. New shingle siding in a soft gray hue and low-to-the-ground shade plants give the exterior a soft, carefree look.
