Late 1700s mourning ring; ships are very uncommon. In relation to mourning, they’re generally a symbol for passage into the afterlife. The foreground of the image here sets up an additional allusion, with an anchor resting on the shore acting as a symbol of hope for those left behind. The image is composed mostly of sepia ink on ivory, but the golden details in the ship are tiny bits of hair from the beloved person.
