"The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country." President Abraham Lincoln, in his annual message to Congress, December 1, 1862 in which he once again announced his intention of abolishing slavery within the United States. In 1943, many major-league stars had joined the armed services and gone off to war and stadium owners and baseball executives worried that the game would never recover. The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was the solution to this problem: It would keep ballparks filled and fans entertained until the war was over. For 12 seasons, more than 600 women played for the leagues teams. First AAGPBL players signed in 1943: Claire Schillace, Ann Harnett, Edythe Perlick, & Shirley Jameson.
The Chicago police labeled her “more dangerous than a thousand rioters.” For almost 70 years, Lucy Parsons fought for the rights of the poor and disenfranchised in the face of an increasingly oppressive industrial economic system. The Black Power salute was a protest by the African American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos during their medal ceremony at 1968 Olympics Mexico City. As they turned to hear the national anthem of America, they each raised a black-gloved fist and kept them raised throughout. Smith, Carlos and Australian silver medalist Peter Norman wore human rights badges on their jackets. The event was one of the most overtly political statements in the history of the modern Olympic Games
