Sign Senses Deer
Our wildlife detection system senses when large animals are on Hwy 3, near Elko and Sparwood. Here is the sign near Elko, in full action. The two deer (at left) have been detected, and the sign flashes to warn the approaching driver. A new Garbage Gobbler is now living at the Hunter Creek rest area. (Really only dangerous for rubbish) #restarea #drivebc
The garbage gobbler has returned to BC in a new (bear-proof) form. See the story of the much beloved originals: http://tranbc.ca/2015/07/31/the-return-of-the-garbage-gobbler-to-bc-highways/#sthash.y7DyVdYR.dpbs
It's the super sweeper -- clearing around guardrails like no other machine. Kudos to VSA Maintenance for obtaining this "one pass does it all" equipment for use on highways around Lytton and Merritt, including the Coquihalla. See it action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7f05S4lDWs
Highway 3 near Skagit Bluffs (about 40 km east of Hope) can be a challenging drive, especially in the eastbound direction where there are tight turns and steep embankments. To improve safety, the ministry took advantage of new technology and installed signs that use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and vehicle activation. http://tranbc.ca/2011/02/09/led-warning-signs-improve-safety/

When 168 cm (5’6”) of snow fell in the Terrace-Kitimat area between February 5 and 7 (4pm-4am, 2015), local maintenance contractor Nechako Northcoast brought in heavy equipment from outside, such as graders, loaders and three snowcats. Typically used on ski hills, these cool cats are designed to move very large amounts of snow. - See more at: http://tranbc.ca/2015/04/02/unleashing-the-snowcats-clearing-the-terrace-kitimat-blizzard/#sthash.PWpq2E78.dpuf

VSA has developed a super sweeper, in partnership with Quebec-based Tanguay, It’s called the SA 150, and it enables VSA to sweep highways faster, with less impact to traffic. See it in action : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7f05S4lDWs
