Monitor and Merrimack (aka Hampton Roads): Fought on March 1862, near mouth of Hampton Roads, VA. It was the Union (under John Marston) vs. the Confederacy under (Franklin Buchanan). It was fought overseas after the Confederacy iron clad Virginia sunk Union's Cumberland ironclad. The victory is inconclusive. Though, this battle was the first ironclad battle.

MONITOR VS MERRIMAC. MERRIMAC HAD MORE GUNS, BUT MONITOR HAD HEAVIER GUNS, AND A TURRET THAT ALLOWED IT TO ALWAYS FIRE ON THE MERRIMAC. MERRIMAC WAS ALSO UNDERPOWERED, AND VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER. THOUGH BOTH SHIPS SUFFERED SOME DAMAGE, THE MERRIMAC RETIRED FIRST. THE JERRIMAC NEVER FOUGHT ANOTHER BATTLE. IT WAS SCUTTLED TO PREVENT IT COMING INTO UNION POSSESION.

Civil War ironclads, CSS Virginia (Merrimack) and the Union Monitor, staged the first sea battle in naval history between armor-plated vessels in 1862. The battle took place at Hampton Roads, Virginia ended in a draw and the Union blockade of the James River continued. It forever changed the nature of naval warfare, however. As one historian observed, the moment the Monitor engaged the Virginia in battle, every navy on earth became obsolete. Image: Louis Prang & Co. (Library of Congress)
