The benefits of WOOD ASH in the garden. the compost. Tea for tomatoes. Put 5lbs of ashes in a permeable bag, tie it shut and lower it into a 50gal tin filled with water. Let it sit for about 4 days, then dip the tea out with a watering can and pour a cupful around your tomato plants once a week, as soon as the plants begin to flower. Most crops can use a potassium boost, but especially tomatoes. 3. Spread ashes around the base of hardwood trees. Apples in particular love this treatment
The Benefits of Wood Ash in the garden. If you have a wood burning fireplace, you can turn your ashes into a useful nutrient for your garden. Wood ash has an alkaline pH so is suitable for raising the pH in acid soils and helps promote flowering.
Wont Erik be happy to hear this ;-) The benefits of WOOD ASH in the garden. Unlike the decomposed remains of leaves, stems and other green plant parts, burned wood doesn’t contain nitrogen. But it does provide phosphorous, potassium, calcium, boron and other elements that growing plants need. It’s also very alkaline and useful for raising the pH in gardens. You’ll need about twice as much of it as lime, but it will supply nutrients at the same time, and if you’re a wood-burner it’s free.

By far, the safest bet for a shady spot in the garden is a leafy green such as lettuce, arugula, collards, kale, mustard, spinach and Swiss chard. Growing in partial or even dappled shade, these greens will be less likely to require protection on really hot days and as long as the soil has good drainage, they'll have more even moisture, which will help to keep them from getting a bitter flavor.

Strawberry Tip for Beginners - You've gotta pinch off runners. Not doing so is one of the biggest mistakes strawberry growers make as beginners. These clones greedily take-up nutrients for themselves and hamper fruit production. Just like suckers on fruit trees, strawberry runners must be pinched or clipped off as soon as you see them.
~WHAT IS ROTATION? A Crop Rotation system works on a three year cycle, with different types of crop being sown/planted in the ground each year to avoid any build-up of disease. HOW TO START-PLAN Make a list of all the plants you want to grow in your vege garden this year Divide your list into summer and winter plants Divide your plants into veggie type: 1 - Root & Bulb 2 - Fruit & Seed 3 - Leaf & Stem~

Crop Rotation Chart: even though we plan on doing a square foot garden where crop rotation isn't totally necessary< I still think it is a good idea.
3 Year Crop Rotation... although I'd be cautious about following potatoes with tomatoes or visa-versa. I think the concept is good: first, below ground crop; second vegetables and seed plants; third cruciferous plants.
