Circa 1858-1860 Day dress, North American. Green is ribbed weave pressed into watered pattern and black is lush satin weave. Most of the fullness of 8 panels is in very small gathers at center back. Some fullness is tucked into knife pleats on sides, leaving little to gather in front, which falls closer to body. White cotton under sleeves and collar detach for cleaning. 1855 Dinner Dress

(1855-1857) Luxurious velvet dresses embellished with fringe trimmings were highly fashionable during the 1850s. When applied in rows, fringes also simulated flounces and made skirts look even wider.
