vintage summer reads
This is THE Book definitely worth reading *****Publication Date: 1966**** "This is a world where sex is a success weapon, where love is the smiling mask of hate, where slipping youth and fading beauty are ever-present specters. It is a world where the magic tickets to peace or oblivion are 'dolls' - the insider's word for pills - pep pills, sleeping pills, ...and pills to chase the truth away." .. one of my favorites that I reread a few times!
Valley of the Dolls / Jacqueline Susann. Beach reading essential - I read this when I was a teenager!
Beach reading essential. One of my mother's favorite books... I can still see it lying on the back of the sofa open waiting for her to pick it back up again.

[TBR]: Never Eat Your Heart Out, by Judith Moore. [Through this collection of essays, Moore charts her entire life, her childhood, her marriage, her children, her writing, through the lens of food, including one adulterous affair. “Somebody might suggest I cooked that year the most superb dinners of my housewifely life because I was trying to atone for my adultery. I wish I could say that was true. The fact is, I cooked so lavishly because I was so happy.”, says Moore!]

Quirky, bizarre, tragic, fiendishly funny, The Hotel New Hampshire is anything but a conventional family saga, though a family saga it certainly is. The Berry family are different. Love abounds - both healthy and incestuous. It is the overwhelming desire of the Berry father to run a hotel, which he does, with dubious success in both a former girls' school in New Hampshire, and in Vienna.

The Hotel New Hampshire - My favorite book. "Keep Passing the open Windows."
Really, anything by John Irving. But The Hotel New Hampshire is one of his best. Forget the movie, read the book. Who would have ever thought a stuffed dog named Egg would be the funniest thing ever?!
"The Hotel New Hampshire" John Irving. Possibly my all time favourite book. Certainly my all time favourite author.
Bears, dwarves, a dead dog, incest, tragedy, probably a nurse, definitely a bit of Vienna - John Irving is John Irving. The first of many of his books that I picked up and couldn't put down again.

Stiff by Mary Roach...this was such a fascinating book!
Amazing book. You won't believe what it has to say!
"Stiff" is an oddly compelling, often hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem. For two thousand years, cadavers some willingly, some unwittingly have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way. In this fascinating, ennobling account, Mary Roach visits the good deeds of cadavers over the centuries from the anatomy labs and human-sourced pharmacies of medieval and nineteenth-century Europe to a human decay research facility in Tennessee, to a plastic surgery practice lab, to a Scandinavian funeral directors' conference on human composting. In her droll, inimitable voice, Roach tells the engrossing story of our bodies when we are no longer with them.
The most fascinating stuff I never wanted to know... But was a very good book
