On the border of Syria, Akkar is one of the poorest regions in Lebanon. Of the nearly one million refugees who have fled the neighboring conflict, 200,000 have settled in Akkar, doubling the population. With support from donors, the United Nations Development Programme has set up a farmers' cooperative to help increase productivity.
Honduras: Almost one century after the isolated village of Plan Grande in northern Honduras was founded, its inhabitants were still living in semi-darkness. To tackle this problem, a UNDP-supported project helped build a hydroelectric power plant, eliminating the use of fuel, candles and batteries.
