The reason we call sideburns "sideburns": meet politician, businessman, and Union Army General, Ambrose Burnside. He was a poor General but a popular man and politician, helped along by his unique whiskers - prominent hair on the side of his face connected to a moustache, with his chin shaved perfectly clean. His popularity gave rise to a new facial hair trend called "burnsides" which later got altered to "sideburns" in 1887.
