tobys estate coffee roaster
Under-caffeinated Brooklynites have a new destination in Toby's Estate coffee, an Australian cafe import that opened in January. The company has been around since 1998 but for their first U.S. outpost they contacted New York firm nemaworkshop to design the space. "It was important that the cafe be a social space for the neighborhood," says nemaworkshop's Anurag Nema. Our last Coffee Break story, we focused on Coffee Bar, a cafe meant to be a stage for the craft of coffee. In a 180-degree flip, Toby's is designed to create a stage for community. "Over the last decade, cafes have been serving up more than cups of coffee to their patrons. They're meeting places, study rooms, extensions of our living rooms, a place we feel safe to harbor for a few hours while checking our email, or finishing the final scene in what will become our breakout playwright," continues Nema. With that in mind, have look at the space in our slideshow.

Vintage Coffee Bean Bag Chairs There are a lot of things we want to own that we will, unfortunately, never be able to own. We’re less concerned about the stereotypically museumesque things: fine art, pottery and anything that hangs on a wall, and more concerned about anything with an engine or a comfortable seat. Falling somewhere between those two categories is this set of Vintage Coffee Bean Bag Chairs. Vintage arm chairs covered with vintage coffee bean bags probably aren’t the most comfortable thing to sit on, but damn if they don’t look good regardless. Available only in Ireland, and currently sold out, these chairs will probably never see the inside of any of our places. Even though we can’t buy them, get them shipped to the US or ever sit in them, we’re fine with ogling these beauties from a distance. $622

The lovely jute sacks hold the green coffee. Some are very pretty with the fair trade symbol and such. Then others are plain like the one with the green writing. It traveled all the way from Ethiopia. I love to get new coffees and look at the new bags. Coffee has traveled in these bags for hundreds of years.

Full Cooking Apron from Burlap Coffee Bag
Full Cooking Apron from Burlap Coffee Bag by dvautier on Etsy, $35.00
Logo, Cafe, Coffee Sack
Just sold and shipped a Java Jayne BBQ apron. Modeled by Jayne herself - my namesake inspiration for my recycled coffee sack creations.
Full cooking is made from re-purposed burlap bag. The apron is fully lined with lightweight green calico cotton print lining (so you don’t have to worry about the itch of the burlap). The apron is approximately 28" wide at its widest point (from waist down) X 28" tall. The tie straps at the waist are 1" wide and 24" long on each side.) It includes a 1" adjustable neck strap and has two 5” x 5” pockets on the front that are also lined with the matching cotton fabric.
I have that burlap bag, more like 12 of them. I now have another good use for them

The coolest feature of this apron is the original coffee bean grower logo on the front with "Cafes Do Brasil" written under it. Java Jayne products are inspired by a good cup of coffee and a spirit of sustainability. I source the burlap material from local coffee roasters to reclaim the large jute shipping bags in which they receive their coffee beans. This saves the bags from entering the waste stream. I then use the burlap material to create unique, one-of-a-kind items that are cherished, useful and best of all, repurposed. Coffee sacks are gently washed to remove travel dust, and are air dried prior to stitching. Inconsistencies in burlap are from the nature of the burlap itself or from its former life as an International coffee bean sack. It's the perfect gift for the coffee lover or Barista in your life.

We've included photos to show how cool the tote is when inside out. These are Large, Strong, and Durable tote bags created from discarded Coffee Burlap sacks. These totes are built big and fashioned to last. Made from recycled coffee burlap bags and lined with reclaimed durable cotton fabric remnants, they are ready to be your carry all. Each bag varies in size slightly due to condition and design of original bag, but each measures at least 16" wide x 14" tall. They also include a 24+" handle. While burlap patterns/textures and lining fabric vary, you will receive the exact one as pictured. This is a soft hemp burlap exterior featuring a graphic of Coffee Arabica Leaves colored in a Lime Green. The interior is a durable Brilliant Colored Floral Print Cotton/Poly fabric, and includes a pair of 22" beige webbing handles.
Let me show you some other awesome green project ideas. People out there are insanely creative. Here are some of their genius creations. This creation from Better Homes and Gardens uses styrofoam balls and fabric scraps to make an eclectic centerpiece. This beautiful bracelet used to be a fork! Made by MarchelloArt, it is the perfect example of repurposing something! I am willing to bet you would not be able to guess what this mini purse is made from unless I told you. Maybe if you could feel it. It has been crocheted from plastic shopping bags! That's one way to keep them out of the landfill! Made by shearmoresheep, this little baby is perfect for carrying your ID or credit cards! I can't help but love this recycled journal, made from mailed letters and a cardboard box. I love journals, and the quirkiness of this speaks to me! It is made by badbooks. This tote, offered by itsourearth, is made from a coffee bean burlap sack. Very cool. Don't know what to do with all those leftover floppy discs? Curioustheatricals has made a mini journal out of theirs! PicaPica offers this awesome bowl, made from melted army and cowboy figures! How cool is that? This bowl/platter, offered by Ibu, is made in the same fashion as my recycled coaster. Very nice. Hope you've enjoyed these ideas!

Beach burlap bag!
This is my new favorite bag right now! I going to be sad to see this one go. For this bag i used a genuine coffee bean burlap sack, cut it to the size i wanted, and lined it with heavy duty interfacing, Slate Blue lining with white stripes and 4 large pockets on the inside. The straps are made from White Nylon Boat Rope. Holding the rope in place i used 4 metal bronze eyelets and a special feature for this bag is the genuine leather squares i sewed on to give it a more sophisticated classic look. I also sewed the leather on with thick White thread so that it stands out against the hickory leather. This would be a great Diaper Bag, Beach Bag, Library Book Tote, Farmers Market, or just a great every day carry all purse. 17" wide x 13" long and 6" depth Please let me know if you have any questions about this bag i would be happy to help. Thank You

Burlap Lunch Bag
Recycled/Upcycled burlap (jute) coffee bags are used to make these one of a kind lunch bags I have nicknamed the “Coffee Bean”! Burlap is treated with a waterproofing silicone spray to keep it clean and bright for years to come. The interior cotton is impregnated with a wax mixture to make it water and stain resistant. Sandwiched in between the interior and exterior layers is Insul-Bright, a batting material infused with mylar to create keep the cold (or heat) inside the bag! Very space-age stuff. Finally, each bag is finished with genuine leather straps for the pinnacle in strength and durability. This bag is sure to last you for years to come. Please note: the bag pictured is the actual bag you will be receiving! This Lunch Bag measures: 8”(l) x 4”(w) x 10”(h) ****** See something you like, but want to tweaked to fit your needs? PLEASE DO NOT ORDER THIS UNLESS YOU ARE 'HEY HARRIET'. The first of the coffee sack bags! This bag is made from a jute coffee sack sourced from our local Brisbane coffee roasters Merlo. The interior is comprised of a reclaimed upholstery remnant, and a piece of new black cotton webbing provides smoothness to the inside of the strap, and also makes up the press stud closure flap. The interior of the bag has two pockets, and there is also an exterior pocket on the back of the bag as well. The strap is long enough to sling across the shoulders, messenger style, and the entire outside of the bag has been coated with a water-based sealant to prevent any 'shedding' of the jute fibers. I hope you like the bag Tracy :) Cheers, Bec XX
