Excellent book about the Stasi in east Germany. I really enjoyed reading this, I still think about it
Gripping and chilling - stories from behind the Berlin wall. I read this book with a mixture fascination and horror at the stories East Germans faced after WWII. Their stories are incredible and sometimes painful to read. What struck me the most is how incredibly recently all of this happened. Highly recommended.
A polyvocal text about individuals who resisted the East German regime, and others who worked for its secret police, the Stasi. It tells the story of what it was like to work for the Stasi, and describes how those who did so now come to terms, or not, with their pasts.
Anna Funder tells extraordinary tales from the underbelly of the former East Germany - she meets Miriam, who as a 16-year-old might have started World War III, visits the man who painted the line which became the Berlin Wall and gets drunk with the legendary "Mik Jegger" of the East, once declared by the authorities to his face to "no longer to exist". Written with wit and literary flair, Stasiland provides a rivetting insight into life behind the wall.

Each enthralling story depicts what it's like to live in Berlin as the city knits itself back together--or fails to. This is a history full of emotion,

La gente cerca di evitare quelli che immagina infelici. Evelyn Waugh (Una manciata di polvere, 1934)
A Handful of Dust. Evelyn Waugh, first published 1934. A satire on the decadence and ennui of the British upper classes, this is vintage Waugh, as bleak as it is funny. It is a novel with surprising plot twists and savage humor conveyed in one of the 20th-century’s purest prose styles.
I've read so many contemporary novels recently I felt the need to return to something 20th century. I'd forgotten just how much I love Evelyn Waugh. His rapier observation, so lightly done, the laugh out loud lines. Joy.
A Handful of Dust by Evelyn Waugh Lady Brenda: "He's in the train now, receklessly mixing starch and protein in the Great Western three and sixpenny lunch."
A Handful of Dust (Evelyn Waugh) | 934 novel, A Handful of Dust, is a sublime example of his bleak satirical style: a mordantly funny exposé of aristocratic decadence and ennui in England between the wars. Tony Last is an aristocrat whose attachment to an ideal feudal past is so profound that he is blind to his wife Brenda's boredom with the stately rhythms of country life. | Used Books from Thrift Books
Devoted to his wife, Brenda, his son, John Andrew, and to Hetton, his very ugly neo-Gothic homestead, Tony Last will lose all three. As his name is always announcing, Last lives at the end of a dying age, the brittle, exhausted 1930s, when England, at least Waugh’s England, is a place where Brenda can throw herself at the feet of a childish lover and where Last can discard his life on an absurd caprice. #books #literature

The story of Logan Mountstuart--writer, lover and man of the world--through his intimate journals. Here is the "riotous and disorganized reality" of Mountstuart's eighty-five years in all their extraordinary, tragic and humorous aspects. The journals begin with his boyhood in Montevideo, Uruguay; then move to Oxford in the 1920s and the publication of his first book; then on to Paris (where he meets Joyce, Picasso, Hemingway, et al.) and to Spain where he covers the civil war.
Brilliant and heartbreaking

The Dud Avocado (New York Review Books Classics) by Elaine Dundy (Author) , Terry Teachout (Introduction)
Originally published in 1958, Elaine Dundy’s debut novel got fresh buzz a few years back, when it was reissued by New York Review Books. If the story of a beautiful, young American girl descending upon ’50s Paris isn’t enough to tempt you into picking up a copy, consider NPR’s description: “Basically, if you were to set Henry James’ Portrait of a Lady near the Sorbonne, untangle the sentences and add more slapstick, sex and champagne cocktails, you’re getting close.” Yes, please!
