Thanksgiving craft: Start with the turkey's face by folding four punched brown card-stock circles in half and gluing the folds back-to-back to create the fanned head shape. Add an orange card-stock beak, a red card-stock wattle, and two googly eyes for facial features. Then ask your kids to write things they are thankful for on a variety of colored card-stock strips and attach them to the back of the folded-over bag top.

When I saw this picture, I thought of the Berghoff article about Multiple Sign Systems. Berghoff discusses how students approach language from different "signs" (singing, art, dancing, etc.) This picture represented to me an approach to reading from an artistic sign. I interpreted this pin as a class reading the book "If You Take A Mouse to the Movies" and students responding to or summarizing the book. This is an example of how a student could connect to reading on a level higher than just looking at the words. This idea, and ones similar to it could be implemented in a classroom to allow students to be creative. Instead of writing a paragraph to summarize a book, they could draw a story map like we see in this picture, or put on a skit, or write a song. I was really inspired by this picture.
